I thought that the cinematography and soundtrack of Man of Steel ruined the feeling of the film a great deal.

Okay, I'm biased since I wrote the book, but I loved the look of the movie. It looked completely unlike any SUPERMAN movie I'd ever seen before, which was kinda the idea.

At times, it looked like an Alex Ross painting brought to life. Or maybe a Superman movie filmed in the style of a paranoid conspiracy thriller or alien invasion flick. Gave the movie a whole different feel than, say, the Christopher Reeve movies or Lois & Clark or whatever.

This sums it up for me as well (well, all except writing the book part ). I can understand why this film did not appeal to everyone (for a host of reasons that need not be rehashed here) but I applaud the filmmakers for doing something different (I tend to applaud such initiatives even if I don't like the final result--though I liked this film just fine).

Agreed. In fact, my biggest gripe against Superman Returns was that it copied TOO MUCH from the Chris Reeve films, right down to the dialogue, which was intended to be homages. Which, while in the Reeve movies was fine, but in Returns, came off as non-sequiturs.

That said, while I enjoyed The Man of Steel doing it's own thing, I was really disappointed in the soundtrack. It sounded too much like the recent Batman films which was not at all appropriate for Superman. But then, it was the same filmmakers, and the same composer, so what do you expect?

Agreed. I thought the stark and gritty cinematography was one of the strongest parts of the film, and really helped ground a lot of the fantastic stuff happening in the story.

Although that being said... I can't help but wish the new Superman costume looked half as good in the movie as it does in the behind the scenes footage on the blu-ray, before the colors got muted so much in post-production.

It's an absolutely stunning suit to look at in natural light, and it's a shame so much of that got lost along the way.

That's one of the things I love about John Williams and Michael Giacchino, they both have a style that is recognizably theirs, but at the same time they can change enough elements of it that it fits the movie/TV show they're working on.

The same thing happened on Superman Returns. The suit looked beautiful in reality, but the final grading on the film made the suit (and everything else in the film) look dingy.

Confused Matthew's review is finished. It's very funny. Link

He makes a valid point that it makes no sense for Zod to complain after his soldiers disappear to the Phantom Zone and he says there's nothing left: he still has a chance to save his people with the codex at that point in the film.

If Zod was really genetically bred to be the defender of Krypton, then he should have surrendered to Kal-El once his ship was sent to the Phantom Zone at the first climax. For, Kal-El, with the Codex, literally embodied whatever future Krypton has.

Also, wasn't the ship with the genesis chamber destroyed by that point?

I can understand if MOS just didn't grab you or interest you for whatever reason, but by no means does it deserve to be on any "Worst Movie of the Year" list. Not when there were movies like RIPD, After Earth, Scary Movie 5 and Grown ups 2.
I haven't seen the others but I thought R.I.P.D. was a decently serviceable Men in Black ripoff. It's not particularly noteworthy but Jeff Bridges & Ryan Reynolds bring enough charm to it that it's worth spending a couple hours watching it if you don't have anything better to do.

On the other hand, Man of Steel was just such a downer and so thoroughly missed the point of what a Superman story is supposed to be. It may have had excellent production values but it loses too many points in the plot category/story/character.

Re: MAN OF STEEL - Grading & Discussion

I popped by a friend's house and his sister was watching it, so I caught a bit from the middle. Maybe I missed something here (or maybe it was the editing, which was pretty awful throughout) but how did Faora get hurt? Here: she beat up Superman, and she took some hits from him herself, and she was able to withstand gunshots galore, yet all of the sudden she gets wounded, is unconscious, and is carried back to the ship by a subordinate. Did the military have Kryptonite in the shells they were shooting at her?? I don't remember Ursa getting knocked out in the original film. I mean, if Faora can give Superman a pounding, what could the military possibly do to her that would render her unconscious?

Toward the end of their fight, Superman broke her breathing-mask-shield-thingy just like he did with Zod. Her "you will not win" speech was as it was disintegrating. I guess it's implied that she passed out from being unable to "adjust" to Earth's atmosphere.

Ah, thank you. That makes some sense.

But the editing was so erratic. And it caught me off guard that she was invulnerable and then somehow she was incapacitated.

Thanks

I never noticed the dingy color but you're right. Compare

Both Returns and MOS look dark and opaque compared to Reeve's costume. A brighter costume would be appreciated.
