Peter Grant and the new Doctor

Thanks to Bob, who pointed me at this, Ben Aaronovitch is talking about his Peter Grant series maybe being televised and also who he thinks should be the new Doctor Who. Good on him. Nobody thinks his choice will turn his back on Hollywood to do this but good on someone in the biz actually voicing an opinion.

Well no because he's principally talking about Peter Grant. Anyway for Professor Zoom, he said on BBC Breakfast that he thought Idris Elba would be his choice for the next Doctor because the writing would have to be completely different to Matt Smith's.

I think Peter Grant should be the new Doctor.

Isn't he the big fat guy who used to manage Led Zeppelin? I thought he died!

Peter Grant or Ben Aaronovitch? Because neither are what you said. Peter Grant is a Police Constable in the Metropolitan Police, he works for Chief Inspector Nightingale in a section known as The Folly.
Ben Aaronovitch is the man what made up Peter Grant and wrote about him.

I wasn't being entirely serious but if you've never heard of the legendary manager of Zeppelin, see above.

Haven't read any of Aaranovitch's stuff but his brother David the newspaper columnist is a hack. I did see Remembrance of the Daleks, the Sly McCoy story he wrote for Doctor Who and I thought it was dire.

Legendary doesn't really cover it.

Determined, innovative, game changing, f****ng frightening, that sort of thing...

Legendary doesn't cover it since I've never heard of him.

I don't understand dismissing a set of books because you didn't like something he wrote 3 decades ago.

I didn't dismiss them. I've just never heard of them. The DW ep - and you did refer to DW in the thread - and his brother are my only frame of reference.

As for his casting suggestion, given that manys a fanboy suggests Elba for about every iconic role going, it doesn't necessarily show that he's the most innovative of thinkers.

But he's not a fanboy, so all I was saying is it's nice to hear from someone in the business.

Re: Peter Grant and the new Doctor

He's an anachronistic detective. He's young, has no drink problems or love problems or problems with authority. He really likes correct police procedure and despite an inauspicious beginning, is good at it. In true old-fashioned British tradition he isn't even a detective since he's a PC. The twist is the type of crimes he ends up investigating and why. If that sounds boring just try reading Rivers of London and I dare you not to a) laugh on a regular basis and b) get hooked on urban fantasy.
