I take it you didn't think TCW was fun?

It had it's moments, like whenever Ahsoka would go crazy on someone with her lightsabers, Or when they'd delve into the mythology a bit, or we'd follow Yoda or Artoo around.

Which isn't to say many of the stories wouldn't be worth watching anyway. But in terms of the simple, old-school fun of the OT, I think Rebels is likely to come much closer to recapturing that.

I guess I can understand some of the criticism I'm seeing that the Stormtroopers are being depicted as a little TOO bumbling and ineffectual in these clips. But frankly they never struck me as being terribly frightening or intimidating in the OT either, so it doesn't really bug me that much.

It was really Vader, Tarkin and the other officers who were the threatening ones, and it looks like that's the same basic approach Rebels is taking with the Empire as well.

The frontline troops of the bad guys in the Star Wars films tend to be a little bumbling and incompetent. Stormtroopers often have trouble hitting targets (or bump their heads into doors ). The Battle Droids had - at best - poor independent thinking and data processing skills and while grouped en masse could cause great damage to an enemy were often laughably easy for one or several Jedi or Clones to cut down by the dozen.

"Buckethead" is a nice shout-out to Rebel Assault II.

Pretty sure this will happen at some point in Episode VII. ( And then the blu-ray commentary will point it out for those who don't get the reference. )

There is a marked difference in the effectiveness of the Clone Troopers vs. Stormtroopers that I choose to interpret as a combination of an inferior clone template--maybe also sub-optimal accelerated growth techniques and imprinting--and a marked difference in the focus of their training.

The Fett clones were bred to win a war, while the later Stormtroopers were for the most part probably geared more towards general police-state thuggery and putting down the odd insurrection with sheer overwhelming numbers and fire power.

I mean if a whole legion of the Emperor's best troops can get ambushed by the sodding Gummi Bears, they can't be terribly bright can they?

^ I don't believe it's been canonically addressed whether stormtroopers are clones or recruits, yet.

Re: New Star Wars animated show "Rebels" coming fall 2014

If it was ever in a canonical book or graphic novel recognized by Lucasfilm then, of course, it's no longer canon. My running theory based on a lot of different opinions I've heard as well as my own is that by the time of the Original Trilogy perhaps, oh, ten percent to twenty percent maximum of the Imperial Army and Navy were comprised of clones, including the aging Jango Fett template.

The great majority of Stormtroopers seen in Episodes IV through VI were conscripts or recruits from the wide variety of Imperial-ruled worlds populated by humans and humanoids. Hence why the senior Clone officers in Episodes II and III (and The Clone Wars) were Jango clones while the black-uniformed Stormtrooper officers leading and training those units during the OT timeframe were a wide variety of different-looking humans.

Right. That's actually what I meant.

Well let's be honest, the only reason the Clone Troopers were so effective in the PT and TCW was because they were the "good guys" and the story required it.

In fact if anything I thought TCW might have overplayed their effectiveness a little too much. Because it's kinda hard to buy the incredible, well-trained fighting force depicted on that show as being in any way connected with the Stormtroopers we see in the OT.

... unless the whole point here is that by the time of the OT stormtrooper era, the corps had gone downhill.

Complacency combined with soldiers becoming far-flung occupation troops with few real opportunities for actual combat except for putting down local uprisings and insurrections - that could turn any well-honed and effective army into a shadow of its former self after two decades or longer of glorified police work and peacekeeping.

Maybe it's like Multiplicity, and the clones get progressively more unreliable as you keep cloning them.
