The hats are not so much goofy as anachronistic. Too "present-day navy". It reminded me of Space: Above and Beyond which didn't feel futuristic at all.

Really? To me the updated TOS Gold/Red/Blue uniforms are perfect.

Which costumes are you referring to when you say the original cast uniforms?
I hated the TOS uniforms, but I really found myself admiring the updated uniforms in this movie. I liked how there were layers- gray pants, military-style boots, and a black shirt underneath the colored tunic. They only wear the tunics on the ship, which makes sense. The black shirt seems to be the base of all of their uniforms.

Re: Grey Dress Uniforms

I have to say I'm a big fan of the dress uniforms. Though one thing that I was disappointed about was the colors of the white fronted uniforms was the grey color instead of the white one in STXI.

Personally I prefer the white color look, more in keeping with the general TMP look they're going for.

I wondered if the cap designs were a call-back to Pike's Cap that you see in his quarters in the Cage, but he never wears, and we never see again in Star Trek.

I liked the TOS uniforms and wanted to see more of those and less of everything else. And yeah, the other outfits did unfortunately make the TOS uniforms look out of place at times.

i kinda like the black officers uniform that Pike and Spock were wearing in the first one those were kinda cool.
Thinking about it now, it would have been nice if the Vengeance uniforms were exactly like the updated and embroidered TOS uniforms, but in black. Dark green or purple might have worked too.

Do you think the Vengeance uniforms were Section 31 uniforms or a rift on the Next Generation?

I was taken a bit aback by the dress uniforms but they fit the more militaristic look of Starfleet in this movie.

The crew of the Vengeance were "private security", as per Scotty. So probably the uniform for a private security firm or private military company.

That may be just because of the lighting.

The new dress uniforms are certainly better than the original, that were made decorative by sticking cut out pieces of paper to it.

Re: Grey Dress Uniforms

Personally I love these new formal uniforms, especially in combination with the on-ship uniforms. They have the same formality as the old movie maroons but in a simpler and more somber style, which seems very Starfleet and appropriate for the more restrained fleet of the AU. It feels a lot like an actual Class A uniform but stripped of a lot of the militaristic flash. Meanwhile they still have the more comfortable and practical-looking uniforms for on the ship instead of having everyone prancing about in full multi-layered dress all the time.

The field jackets are pretty sweet too. I like that they replace the bright colors that are great on ship but a bit too "shoot me now" with a darker grey, while still leaving those little windows for the colors to show through. Again, it's something that seems very practical, especially compared to the big bulky jackets from TWoK that were put over the already-thick uniform. Also, I whole heartedly approve of the wet suits. Kirk and McCoy should spend the entire next movie in them.

I loved them, nice and smart and professional. Also not being politically correct and putting female officers in skirts and boots.
Just wish they would explain the rank bars?
I liked them as well. from what i could tell 1 bar is ensign 2 bars is lieutenant 3 bars are for Lieutenant Commanders and Commanders (if you note that Scotty had two bars on his dress uniform instead of 3 and both he and McCoy are both Lieutenant Commanders so it must have been a prop error). and four are for Captains.
The rank system is the same as in TOS.

On the normal duty uniforms, the insignia is straight out of TOS (albeit with a 'thin' bar replacing the broken bar from the original). The dress versions, I didn't get a good look at, but I'm guessing that a similar system is in place.

Oh wait, you mean the other new uniforms, the ones with the little colored triangle on them denoting the wearer's division? I didn't even look at the rank pins on those.
