The rumour on twitter is that Ben Daniels is going to be announced as the Doctor (12th).
He'll be 50 next year - can't see it
Well if he's in good nick...

If it is what's being announced I wonder why they're doing it now, unless he's lined up a big new role that's about to be announced and they want to get ahead of the curve.
Ian Levine's Twitter stream leaves the impression that his Tweet about the BBC Worldwide e-mail a few days ago put the BBC into panic mode.

The panicked reaction strikes me as odd, though, because apparently the e-mail concerned itself with broadcast dates, not with who was starring, unless Moffat really thought he could pull off a surprise regeneration but the August 2014 broadcast date suggested too much about his plans so they decided to get in front of the story instead of leaving the media to ferret out the story.
No, the email specified "New Doctor", in addition to the other information.

I said it 3 years ago and i'll say it again. The next actor will probably be some unknown who's had little parts in BBC dramas.

Ah, good to know. This is what happens when one relies on the game of telephone that is Twitter.

Idris Elba would definitely be my number one choice but I'd love Iain Glen (he's Irish but close enough ).

Same here. I've been on about Elba for the doctor for ages. Annother good choice would be Damien Molony and Jason Fleming.

What is it about Idris Elba that is particularly Doctor-like, according to his supporters? Or is it just because you like the actor?

Maybe we're looking in the wrong place. It is Moffat casting the role still after all.

Ooh,Stephen Mangan! He was awesome as Dirk Gently, and when I first saw him, I thought he'd make an excellent Doctor!

Both. :P

The great thing about him is that he wouldn't' be a typical doctor at all. Now I don't want the to stray to far away from a traditional doctor and cast a teenager or a woman, but I don't want them to pick a "default" kind of doctor either.

Elba reminds me of Eccleston the most who's already one of my favourite doctors. Plus I can't remember a single thing Elba's been in that I didn't like.

He's a good actor but completely wrong for the part of The Doctor.

Re: Matt Smith confirmed for series 8

We need something fresh and different. Not too far astray, not too similar to past doctors. We want a goldilocks doctor, juuuuuuuuuuuust right.

Okay, how about my second choice then? Damien Molony.

I haven't seen Molony in anything, but as far as looks, I think we can go a bit further astray than that. 30ish, handsome in a not entirely conventional way, floppy brown hair. . . yawn.

He was in the last two series of Being Human. He'd most likely play the more like McGann the most but with more humour.

^I found him particularly hammy in Being Human. But everyone's hammy in that. How does he differ in other shows?

Being Human is the only TV he's done so far.

I saw him in Travelling Light at the National Theatre and he was ok, not hammy but then Antony Sher was hamming it up so much in that you didn't really notice anyone else.
