How about stuck in the mud? Maybe we should ask Dale that one.
..or ask Meghan (Penny 2.0) about that walker buried head-deep in the mud...

That's kind of what's great about this episode. It's very much a "I don't know" thing as it was a very, very difficult situation that, really, has no good, clear, right answer.
Just thinking about the episode right now, and I still find it difficult to look into a disturbed, crying child's face, knowing what was going to happen.

Perhaps that would be a weakness which would allow Lizzie to strike again (at any time in the future), but I would have tried something--anything to save her.

They were already saving her. What they couldn't do & quite possibly no one left on Earth could do, was... fix her. A person that can't be fixed is a real issue in the primal world. They are a drain, a distraction & in some cases a threat

Ahhh, remember the good old days when all we had to do to fix a person & get things back on an even keel was hack off their infected leg with a hatchet? I'd rather do that crap any day of the week & twice on Sunday, rather than escort around a wackjob kid. lol

I wouldn't call Dale's zombie a non-threat and as for Meghan, her mother should have been closer/more observant of her daughter. They do live in zombieland.

I have to say, this could be my favorite WD episode of all time. It really tore at me, I was crying with Carol at the end. The actress who played Lizzie was amazing, this was a believable break with reality, weather it be because of issues or not.

I don't think it really needs pointing out that killing every walker they come across is both impractical and counter-productive. They're essentially living as hunter-gatherers, so most of their energy is spent on finding enough food and water to survive for another day.

As we saw at the prison, even if you're in a fortified location and can kill most of the ones that turn up at the fence everyday...the next day there'll be just an many or more to take their place. It never ends.
I heard an interview with Max Brooks where he talks about survival in a zombie apocalypse and he mentions expending energy. I couldn't tell what their plan was, but Carol was up for most of the night with Judith/keeping watch before we saw the house and we know Tyrese wasn't sleeping well. I'm not sure if Tyrese ever took over Judith/watch duty. Tyrese continued to have trouble sleeping.

Then there is the emotional toll of the day, finding Mika dead, having to take care of Lizzie. Killing the rail walker might have been a bit too much.

They have to be exhausted. They never did kill the deer, so they only had pecans/pecan cookies to eat. Not what I would consider a balanced diet.

And that's not taking into account what they had to eat and drink before the house.

As Rick said in the comics, they are the walking dead, they just don't know it yet.

The point is that "stuck" may not always be a permanent state. That railroad zombie could have become unstuck at some point. Plus, when you have kids around (regardless of if they're nuts) it wouldn't be good to leave it.

But with their circumstances, they were leaving, so it doesn't matter as much. If they were staying at the grove, then they should have killed it.

Re: The Walking Dead Season 4

BTW, have we ever seen Daryl even once make an arrow? Bullets should be emergency use only, or a last line of defense in human conflict, unless you know how to make gun powder, forge bullets & save casings (Which you should, eventually). A zombie emergency is no less than 5 or 6 zombies per person, as in... 7 zombies? one bullet, & then go to work. 14 zombies & two people? 2 bullets, etc...

But what's really bugging me is the ongoing absolute lack of common sense in weapon choice and usage. Knives? A Hammer? Sign posts & street garbage? Are you serious? That's the best you can do against animalistic attack? In 4 seasons, one character has a useful close range weapon. ONE! You don't need nothing fancy really.

How common are these? A wilderness survivor will need one a n y w a y

At least, make yourself this. Nothing sexy, metal & sharpness

in WWZ things got to the point where that kind of 'prybar' type weapon was a standard 'sidearm', I believe.

Re: The Walking Dead Season 4

primary weapon was more of a shovel with a flattened/sharpened head. Something sharp, light-weight, with good grip and reach/extension. And not useless if you also want to use it to dig a hole. Overall, very easy to make and use.

At the very least, machetes are super common. Every hardware store, sporting goods store, walmart etc carries a bunch. Ought to be pretty standard issue by this point. At 2 years out, having a pocket knife as your primary weapon is retarded. hammer is mildly better, because he got a long-reach one, but the weight will drag on you pretty quickly in a fight.

The pike/sharp shovel approach is really best, as you get good leverage and it keeps them at arms' length. They get too close by the time you're using a pocket knife.

Makes for a better camera shot though.

They already got too close when they are at arm's reach. So even with a shovel the walkers are already too close for my taste .

Why the characters didn't put a greater effort in making long distance weapons such as bows and arrows is beyond me. They don't need super cool ready-for-the-Olympics-bows. A wooden one would do, as long as the arrows flies a few feet. And while they were at the prison, they had the time.

I don't think the situation has reached the point where they would try to make their own bows yet. There's still plenty of things to salvage as weapons.

Right now, making weapons is the furthest thing from their minds. At the prison, yeah, they should have been on top of that.

If I recall correctly, I do believe we've seen Darryl whittling away at a stick to make an arrow before.
