I much prefer the colors to the yellowish tint of SD. I always adjusted it that way on my tv, now its just easier.

Re: Season FOUR OFFICIAL TNG Blu-Ray Discussion Thread

I'm usually one that demands the restoration of films to stay true to the original color timing. Didn't bother buying THE MATRIX on blu-ray as the Wachowskis tinkered with it. Same with Lucas on the STAR WARS TRILOGY. However, in thee case of TNG, I'm totally cool with the new color timing because the old SDs always looked pretty ugly with the limitations of color on video and I don't think any of the DOPs would ever claim those old tape masters are what they always wanted the show to look like. I can understand wanting to keep the old color pallet as a preference though, as the SD versions are what TNG really looked like for over 25 years. Still, if you wanna watch the shows as they were originally seen, they'd probably look pretty decent on CRT television sets. I'm actually not giving up the DVD sets, because I feel they're just as important as the new HD versions. They are what aired on television many years ago, so that makes them special.

Here's a great SD/HD comparison video for "Galaxy's Child", nicely showing the difference between the original CGI and the newly created stuff from Modern Video:

LOL at the sinister music playing at 3:20 while Geordi gets ready for Leah.

The screenshots from "Night terrors" have been released, so here's the next observations article. I love all those new graphics of various chemical compounds.

I'm not sure how my eyes caught this. I was watching Data's Day and when Data is feeding Spot, I noticed a small bug inside the food dish. It was moving around a bit. It's brief but it's there for sure. This HD treatment can be awful at times!

Here's the next observations article, "Identity crisis". I'm glad they fixed that infamous blooper on the main engineering viewscreen... ;-)

Great stuff!

Second to last screenshot, though - why (and, indeed, how) does a new CGI shot of the Enterprise have a massive matte line around the top of the saucer?!

No idea how that happened... All I can say is that when CBS-D redid this shot for "Ethics", using a new new CG model of the Enterprise, the result looks flawless.

I'm thinking it's probably not a matte line. I don't have the opportunity at the moment to look at the shot in motion, but it looks to me like the dorsal phaser array. Notice how the thick line stops just about where the phaser array would end at such an angle? I think the ship is simply aligned to camera in just the right way to make it look like a matte line. As you correctly point out, why would a CGI shot have that problem?

I don't think that's a matte line. Sure that it can't be the phaser array on which we look up in this frame? If you look at the first scene with the CG model you can see the upper decks with the bridge dome above the dark line. So I think the angle in this frame is somewhat strange.

Yeah, that's the phaser strip. Notice it goes away along the outer edge as the phaser strip should. CGI wouldn't have a matte line since there's no matte.

Here's the next article, "The nth degree". Definitely no matte lines here, but a nice anime reference on Einstein's blackboard! :-)

So much CG Enterprise! Where could that footage of the 4 foot model have wound up? Thank goodness they found most of the stuff with the 6 foot model. The overall project might be less impressive if they didn't have those glorious shots of the original model from the pilot onward.
