If you're going to spend the time and money to pursue a four year degree or beyond, you ought to have a very clear understanding of why you're doing it and what your goal is as well as what it's actually worth to you. Otherwise you're going to wind up with little more than a useless degree and some peculiar memories of how you spent your free time.

Unfortunately as others have noted, college in the U.S. now is a default - everyone goes because they're expected to, because it puts off adulthood for another four or more years and because if you don't go you're viewed as having fallen below some basic threshold of minimal achievement and therefore have failed or been denied an "opportunity" that's close to an entitlement. A hugely dysfunctional set of attitudes.
Yep. This a thousand times. I know enough folks who wasted money on a useless degree to end up in a trade that pays the rent and then some. And who are very happy. AND realized just how much time and money they wasted following a course expected of them by society of the "right" way of growing up and pursuing a career.

There are better ways, and much less costly ways as well.

As far as Kirk's advancement in Starfleet in the JJverse, I pose this: Kirk is a genius. Kirk is a natural leader. He's the 'Good Will Hunting' of Star Trek. End of story.

I guess in all the hubub of folks wanting to pick apart the first movie, they forget that Pike tells Kirk that his aptitude scores are off the charts and asks him if he likes, "being the only genius-level repeat offender in the Midwest?"

Since the look of Klingons, in general, is well established, they would be the same in the Alternate Reality as the Prime Reality.
Same goes for the Romulans, yet Nero and his gang don't exactly look like those seen in TOS or TNG.
They pretty much look like bald, working-class vulcans to me. Oh, and they have tattoos.

Since we never saw working class Romulan oil rig workers prior to this, there was nothing established to say that they did not exist in the Empire.

Fundamentally, they were tweaked TOS Romulans (Humans with Volcan-like features, really).

Well within previously established possibilities.

If there weren't ridgeless Romulans, then Spock wouldn't have been able to hide within Romulan society.

And who is to say that Star Trek aliens don't have regional/racial differences like humans do. We could go as far as to say that they even have racism like humans do, and that there is social stratification based upon race. Maybe there were ridged Romulans in the upper echelons the whole time, and we never saw them.

Also, to me, the Abrams Romulans still looked like they had ridges, Abrams had just toned the look down quite a bit and brought them to something midway between TOS and TNG (like he seems to have done with Klingons). They were still recognizably romulan to me. I can't wait to see what he does with other Trek races (especially Andorians )

Or, JJ recently watched the film Enemy Mine and really liked the way Drac looked. Or the Drac species mated with the Klingons.

Well, there's no real resemblance but that's a nice lift from AICN.

When did Wesley show any form of leadership ability? He was a genius, yes, but showed no true focus nor any real ability to be a ship's Captain (well, if you don't count what happened in "The Naked Now")

The fact that Starfleet mobilized the cadets and crewed the ships in orbit with largely (or at least implied to be) cadet crew leads me to think that whatever has the rest of the fleet tied up is leaving them shorthanded. Kirk's promotion to Captain (likely shoved through by Pike) could be part PR movie (reward the man that saved the planet), and part "We'll he can keep the chair warm till we find someone better." The last three years could have been the Enterprise more or less shaking-out and on softball sort of missions to see if Kirk was up to the job.

One was a sixteen-year old boy, the other was a twenty-five year old man. I'd say they're apples and oranges from a maturity aspect.

Just an aside: I've not had this much fun with the run up to a Trek movie in ages. Feels good to get some of the old vibe back.

For what it's worth, I did a quick count of Collin's 3/5 movie reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. Only 15 of about 175 3 star reviews were rotten. So about 93 percent of his 3/5 reviews were noted as "fresh."
Perhaps Rotten Tomatoes felt it necessary to move the goal posts to prevent a 100. All of the major critics have indicated their reviews will be positive. We should see those soon.

Maybe you should have another look.

Those actors wore shitloads of prosthetics, and not just on their ears.
