"Didn't do as well as expected" by whom, I'd have to ask? And what were the numbers* for the UK / Germany / Europe, versus numbers for the previous Trek films in those same markets?

Every time this issue is raised, it seems as if Star Trek (2009) is being compared to the sort of action movies which typically do double or triple overseas what they do domestically, while the typical pattern for Star Trek films has the domestic take at roughly double the international.

* i.e., % of Int'l. box office and/or % of worldwide totals?
I'll just go ahead and retract what I said earlier and my reasoning for why other countries are getting the release, before the film's place of origin. Although so long as I've thrown a word like "probably" into a harmless little forum discussion like this (the equivalent of talk in a drinking establishment and not a CEO boardroom), it's all fair game.

Looking at this...
http://trekmovie.com/2009/10/05/star...fice-analysis/
...and the focus on trying to improve International Box Office, especially non-English speaking places, Star Trek Into Darkness ought to be getting its world premiere in North Korea!

There's no film-by-film breakdown of domestic vs int'nl percentages for big screen Star Treks... (although you can calculate The Voyage Home did well, by subtracting one from the other). Instead the focus is on summer blockbusters instead and how the last one did 1/3 the business around the world, when closer to half is what they probably wanted.

And for the sake of argument, there's that word again...

Anyone here planning on seeing it in London? Will it be showing at the Empire Leicester Square as per every other Trek film (apart from Nemesis)?

Any idea when tickets will be available to book?

Re: Early UK Release For Star Trek Into Darkness

I thought it was fairly well known that Trek (the movies anyways) generally doesn't do that great outside of the USA. When The Voyage Home was sold to non US distributors, that's actually what they called it: "The Voyage Home: Star Trek IV" and it had that little prologue of events from TWOK and TSFS to set up the story.

I wish everybody could get it earlier, of course, but I can also understand Paramount wanting to do whatever they can to maximize their investment.

Several countries have an earlier release date, not just the UK.

Sources at Paramount say that the move was related to feeling that in international markets the film fit better into the calendar a week earlier in some territories based on competing films.

It's about time: the British are forever having to wait ages for American film and TV to get across the Atlantic, so it's nice to be put first for a change.

Eh, the US are getting a celebration of Doctor Who each month for the 50th and we're getting nothing, it's like we've swapped!

Just saw an ad for the film on TV (which is quite early) - looks like Australia is getting it a week early too.

Perhaps there should be a separate "official" early review thread that can be merged into the whole upon the movies release in the States?

Trek 09 did badly in Germany. The TNG movies did better in Germany which indicates to me that TOS was simply not popular there whereas TNG was.

The movie 'Battleship' starring Rihanna even did better in Germany than Trek 09. Infact Battleship nearly doubled Trek 09s overseas $ !!!

The international trailers need to emphasise the action and pretend it isn't Star Trek because non English speaking countries (except Germany) can't stand Star Trek !

Why bother? We should have a review thread as normal and just like the rest of us, Americans can join in when it is released.
