Checked it again, and it was quite poor - the version on the SD channel actually looked better, though probably just because it was brighter. Did notice the SD was 'stretched' to widescreen, whereas the one on the HD channel was the normal 4:3 that the remastered ones have been.

No way this is the true reel to reel restoration. They wouldn't do that before it's released on disc.

They promoted it as such, running straight after the season 1-2 HD remasters, but yes, it's been established that SyFy are just running the season 2 SD transfers. I expect they'll run true season 3 HD on the next round of repeats (after the blu-ray release).

You can tell by looking at the fonts in the opening credits that are slightly (but noticeably) different than there SD counterparts.

Here is 'The Inner Light" is SD:

and in HD:

While the fonts look very close they are not, also the quotation marks on the HD version are bigger and closer to the text. So don't be fooled by upscalling the fonts will tell you.

I should think that you can tell by the poor image quality that you're watching an SD upconverted episode. Besides, the fonts were changed after the demo disc so that they resemble the original font even more closely.

Quotation marks changed slightly. In Season 1 they used the curly quote marks: http://tng.trekcore.com/hd/albums/1x...ost_hd_057.jpg

In Season 2 they used the straight quote marks: http://tng.trekcore.com/hd/albums/2x...per_hd_049.jpg [but tapered and italicized unlike the sampler disc variant]

They have stuck with the S2 quote marks for S3 onwards.
