You guys are missing something here. How did Leonard manage to avoid seeing the movies and also internet chatter before finally reading the book for that even to still be a spoiler?

Hell, I'm not a Potter fan, but I've at least seen the movies and read online all the major plot points without having opened the books.

I personally found it strange that he didn't know the spoiler already. It's just one of the many details the writers get wrong on the show when dealing with "nerd culture".
The only thing that I know about Harry Potter is that there is a school for witchcraft and a girl named Hermione. I haven't read any books or seen any of the movies. I just have zero interest in it. I can't be the only one.
That's like saying that Star Trek has a ship and a guy with pointed ears. Technically correct, but next to useless in characterizing it.
Which was kind of the point. One can be a geek/nerd but know next to nothing about a particular franchise that doesn't interest you.

I've found that when the nerd gestalt recommends something, it's usually worthwhile. Even if it doesn't look interesting at first glance.

Don't you mean the "nerdstappo"? (apologies to Stephen Colbert, and just kidding)

I still haven't watched more than a handful of Buffy. I know some of the character names and next to nothing of the storylines. Come and get me Nerdstappo.

Re: No attempt to clone The Big Bang Theory yet?

I think that a measure of success may be in re-purposing this show from the point of view of a handful of nerdy girls. There's a certain mystique in nerd girls/geek girls that might have some potential for a series to either compete with or add to the TBBT universe.

Who knows? Maybe there will be a Dr. Amy Farrah Fowler spinoff. But the series shouldn't last too much longer... the ideas are starting to tread water. The Howard in Space storyline was kind of exhausting.

Let's 2.5 Men this:
The plot revolved around [Alan] being spoiled by [Charlie/Ashton] regarding a plot point in a Harry Potter book (not nerdy in the slightest). In response, he decides to move out, into [current whats-her-face]'s apartment. This opens up the door for [current slut] to move in to [Charlie/Ashton's house]. Ultimately, the issue is resolved by [what's-her-face] and [Charlie/Ashton]'s mutual desire to not live with their S.O., and status quo being returned. A subplot involves [Jake] being forced to spend the weekend with [Charlie's mother], who smothers him much to his discontent. [I dunno, some minor characters, maybe Judith and Herb] attend a retreat for [Judith/Herb's] company and attempt to have Cirque Du Soleil sex.
I thought I had a general grasp of the characters of 2.5 Men but I admit I don't know Judith or Herb. Anyway, nice plot reformatting.

Judith is Alan's ex-wife, Herb is the guy from Drew Carey Show that married her.

Pretty much it which is why some maybe react so harsh against Big Bang calling it shit or something else because they believe it's making a mockery of the sub culture.

That's open for debate but as Spot said the steretypes in the show are not far off from reality and i have some similarities to the guys on the show myself which is why i find the show so funny because at times you need to be able to laugh about yourself.

The shows' golden seasons were 1-2, maybe 3 (the time where they actually made science jokes but a little bit of general knowledge and a bit of interest in science was easily enough to get most jokes) but they did downgrade the complexity of the humor once the show hit really big and became one of the most successful current sitcoms.
Pretty much agree 100% with this. The first two seasons had me in stitches, but the rest barely get a smirk out of me. They've moved from 'these guys are geniuses' to 'these guys play with cool toys and read comics'. Not that there's anything wrong with that, it's just not as funny.

Sheldon is pretty much the only reason to watch the show. Geez that kid whinges a lot though. You'd think someone as smart as he would have learned to adapt to life a little better.

In another episode, Summer Glau made an appearance. They mentioned the Sarah Conner Chronicles more than once. I don't think they mentioned Firefly at all, but then that is the show for which she is best known in the nerd community and that is not the audience to which BBT is geared.

The show tries way to hard to make the characters appear to be "of" nerd culture and too often fails.
I wonder how many nerds are on TBBT's payroll? Not that many I'd wager. Does Mr (Prof?) Smoot still consult with them?

It is his genius that provides for his cushion from reality.

I'd read/heard some suggestions that identify Sheldon's various neuroses, there are many. Obsessive compulsive disorder and Asperger's syndrome were two common suggestions. It could be also argued that it is in poor taste to use archetypes for comedy that involve mental illnesses. Those with that argument have likely never been exposed to Family Guy or South Park.

Howard is obnoxious, Leonard has low self esteem and Raj can't speak to women without alcohol but these are all relatively tame social impediments compared to Sheldon who, for example, can't handle someone sitting in his chair or adjusting to his 'bathroom schedule.' Many of the A plots used to revolve around Sheldon but now that the characters have paired off with partners Sheldon ends up carrying the B plot in the later seasons.

And now they've introduced "the Gooch" from Scrubs. Wonder if she'll be in more than this episode?

Probably. Or at least, it'd be smart of the writers to keep her around. They did promise us a Raj relationship, and I don't think they meant Stuart.

Kate Micucci (The Gooch) is part of Garfunkel and Oates, the duo that wrote "Fuck You" and a couple other funny songs.

From Wikipedia:

In January 2013, Micucci's casting was announced for a recurring role on The Big Bang Theory as "a potential love interest for the confirmed bachelor Raj."[18] Her character debuted on February 14, 2013.
