I have a hard time imagining Smith being successful outside of San Francisco. He was finally in a position with that team where all the star aligned as far as a good defense, good coach and decent running game. I feel like Harbaugh was able to get the maximum ability out of him.

So Smith's choice is be a backup in San Francisco, hoping Kapernick has a brutal stretch or gets injured or go flounder somewhere else? Wow, choices!

Smith's going to get himself a nice payday once he gets cut prior to his roster bonus vesting. As I said in the regular season thread:

I give Smith all the credit in the world for soldiering on, and he's made some improvements in his game, but even if he didn't have the whole "seven offensive coordinators in seven years" thing hanging over him, it wouldn't change the fact that he's basically only capable of a limited number of throws from about 15 yards in. It's easy to say that Smith has been having a phenomenal season, numbers-wise, but that's traditional numbers based upon having a running game, run-blocking offensive line (Oh, God, imagine Cutler behind that line), and coaching staff that's superior to everyone else in a passing-oriented league. His advanced numbers only take some of that context out and they drop him into the average to slightly above average (12th in DYAR, 20th in WPA, 15th in PFF player grade, and so on). Using some common sense for team context drops him even further.

I do wonder what he'd be if he hadn't suffered that shoulder injury.

Smith's going to get a decent contract this spring. It just won't be this contract, because no team in the league wants to touch that backloaded monstrosity.

Rumor is it's K.C. he's headed for. Would they give up the #1 pick for Smith? Or would it be 2nd & 3rd round picks?

It has to be a combo of lower picks if he's going to KC... there is no way that Smith alone is a QB worth the #1 overall pick, and KC can't be so desperate that they would overpay by that much.

Giving up #1 overall for Alex Smith should be cause for automatic termination and probably civil commitment in the psych ward, too.

You don't even get first round picks for good players in trades anymore. We're talking mid-round pick at best.

The 49ers will be lucky to get a 6th-round pick at best for Smith. They can make all the noise they want about feeling confident that they can work out a trade or whatever, but everyone knows that the finances simply don't work out to eat a $9+ million cap hit for a guy who's going to be your backup quarterback. San Francisco's leverage is essentially nonexistent, and they're posturing.

Carson Palmer would disagree with you. And a first-round pick from the Raiders is almost as good as a #1 overall pick.
