Also, thanks to everyone for the well wishes! I was thrilled by those numbers, and I can only hope they continue dropping! I'd love to walk into my Doctor's office and thank him, but that I would no longer need those expensive medications any longer.

I got it at Woolworths. There is a huge range of tropical fruit available in this city.. I think this durian is from Thailand.

And lo, I have torn it asunder! Which is a fancy way of saying I failed to segment and peel it correctly, but here it is anyway

This is the bit you are supposed to eat, the "custard" like part. It really is exactly like gooey custard in consistency.

It appears to be in four lobes divided by fibrous membrane.

After digging out all the edible bits I put them in this container. It is very heavy. You get a lot of custardy bang for your buck with the durian.

The brown bits are seeds.

And it was ... DELICIOUS!!!!!! ABSOLUTE AMBROSIA. Why the pungent aroma of rotten onions and fruit salad fermenting in the bottom of a rubbish bin now fills the whole house! As in.. permeates it. Intensely.

I am proud of myself because I ate quite a bit of it, trying to capture the taste I remembered from durian ice cream and some durian cakes and I did capture it.. creamy, warm, fermenting fruit but I didn't quite get to enjoy it because the onion taste was so strong. Some bits did have noticeably less onion in the taste but it was always there. I've got it in the fridge now (god help the cheese..) SEALED and I'm going to see if eating it cold improves it.

At one point as I was literally up to my wrist in the thing digging out globs of stuff from around the dividing walls the word "autopsy" came to mind.

Maybe it just needs some ice cream.

The smell is totally gone and so far it doesn't seem to have permeated it's sealed container in the fridge.

SmoothieX I don't think I would try surstromming, but I'm a bit fish sensitive at the best of times. Then again, I can't think of actually ever refusing to try something so maybe I'd manage a tiny bit on a cracker.

A lot of things, including durian, smell a lot stronger than they taste.

Durians! I've never eaten one, but I did have a durian flavored sugar wafer cookie. It was... how you say... WEIRD.

So teacake, does it taste better chilled? Seriously, I wonder if there's some special durian recipe that gets rid of the unwanted flavors and brings forth the desirable ones.

I got kicked out of one a long while back for getting in a fight with my ex-wife's fiance (he's bonified). I maintain that I had every right to do it, because I was the goddamned pater familias!

Yes we've always had woolies, though it used to be called Safeway. You can't get durian in any of them, need to be near a bigger asian population but it's quite easy to find lately. For a long time it was a mystery fruit to me and I never saw it. There are also gazillions of independant asian grocery stores with a veg and fruit section where you might see it. And of course a lot of stuff actually gets grown here, eating some papaya now from queensland.

I have opened the sealed container. The bottom is now all liquid. It is not as pungent as yesterday and I ate a big glob of the custard, the onion was very slightly reduced. I doubt I'll eat much more of it though

It really bothers me when I don't quite get what people like about a food, I want to figure the food out when that happens. I need someone to explain why they love the durian. It's not the rot, it's the onion that mystifies me.

Restaurateur Oliver Peyton was on radio this am discussing our current horsemeat scandal and mentioned how demand for vegetarian at his restaurants had increased in recent months. But the figure I found shocking was when he said we throw away over fifty per cent of vegetable crops. What a waste.
