Huell Howser dead at 67

Now, I know that almost everyone out there has NO idea who this man is, but in California, likely everyone saw him at least once on tv. Or more likely heard him.

With his massive body-builder physique and Tennessee accent, he roamed California, fascinated by...just about everything he ever saw and everyone he ever met. You have to hear the amazement in his voice for the most common of things to really appreciate him. Serious. Complete amazement and interest. He seemed to take delight in the most mundane of everything. For many years, he was joined by his cameraman (Louie), who was rarely ever seen.

Howser would go to famous and nowhere-near-famous places and start filming. Impromptu meetings with locals could become the core of a half-hour episode.

He seemed like such a good man. Here's hoping he continues to roam through California's Gold.

Well, that sucks. I wasn't a regular viewer but I've seen his show plenty of times over the years. He seemed like a really cool down to earth guy. RIP Huell.

Terrible news. I'm from Los Angeles, and remember watching him for years on KCET (the local PBS station, for those not familiar with So. Cal TV). He was a well liked fixture of the station, and he will be missed.

This was the lead article in the local (Fresno) paper and the LA Times, at least online. He had an impact on a lot of Californians, very fond memories.
