I'll admit, I have seen James Hong (Ryan Reynold's Avatar) in everything and he originally attracted me to this movie.

It was a good buddy cop popcorn flick. The moment I saw Kevin Bacon I knew he'd be the bad guy, but Ryan Reynolds and Jeff Bridges have good banter going back and forth.

There was some points that I felt they missed the mark. You really don't have a clue what's going on and why some things are they way there are. It really did feel like a set up for a sequel or a franchise at some point.

It's worth the $5.99 I spent to watch it on PPV, but it's no epic.

82. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (A)

Discussed more in the review thread, but a superb film, and the year's best action movie. Jennifer Lawrence continues to present her case to be the defining female star of the next decade.

201. White House Down (✩✩✩✩) - Download - I finally got around to seeing this summer's big White House under seige movie. Channing Tatum and Jamie Foxx seemed a bit miscast in their roles but they were serviceable none the less and with this being a Roland Emmerich film, it was a fun spectacle.

202. Olympus Has Fallen (✩✩✩) - Download - Saw the other White House under seige movie the next day. Same plot, different actors. It wasn't as good as White House Down but it was a decent action movie. When I saw Ashley Judd, I thought that we'd get another Judd/Freeman team-up but no such luck. They both had small roles and didn't share any screen time.

203. The Challenger (✩✩✩✩) - Live TV - This movie covers world-renowned physicist extraordinare Richard Feynman's involvement in the challenger disaster investigation. Stars William Hurt and Bruce Greenwood. It was a fascinating look into something I have little knowledge of and Hurt played the lead very well. I heard rumblings of a design flaw and that's what it came down to. There was also a brief nod to the crew of the Challenger surviving the initial explosion, something I've tried to find out more about over the years.

92. Deathrace 2000: C+
93. Thor Dark World: A-
94. Superman Unbound: B+
95. JCVD: B-
96. Drive: B-

The Ryan Gosling led film about an uncharismatic Hollywood stunt drive/grease monkey whose manager seems to be Bryan Cranston in both instances and for high stakes money will serve as a getaway driver for those willing to pay.

What feels like a possible plot thread, him becoming a stock car driver, is abandoned in the second act by cross interests coming into play brought on by Ron Perlman and the ties to east/west coast mob dealings. The cross interest is that Carrey Mulligans husband is being released from prison and he owes for being "protected" while in prison so he is forced into a job. A job Goslings Driver agrees to help with to settle the debt and leave the woman and kid alone.

I was never buying into the romance with his next door neighbor played by Carrey Mulligan. I keep using their real names cause I can't honestly recall if they were ever said more than once or twice. All I recall is Gosling's character being called "Driver" or "mommy's friend".

There really wasn't but one scene of actual high speed driving skills. Can't say for certain there is even a happy ending to the film. A bit dark as I saw it. I feel my grade is generous, I don't see what the excitement was for this a few years ago.

83. Frozen (A-)

I'll probably see this again to firm up my opinion (I believe I revised Tangled upward one grade on second viewing, so that could happen here). This movie has some of the best animation and characterization Disney has ever done, and a couple of really good songs; alongside that, it's got some functional songs (the 00s revival of animated musicals has never really hit the same consistent quality that even the late 90s Menken ones did), and some superfluous trolls.

It's possible I could notch this up on a second viewing. I've no doubt the fact that I just finished the book within the last week impacts my view of the film for what was omitted and altered.

That said I still found it be overwhelmingly well done. The last 1/3 of the film shines the most as it's also the least altered from the book. The first 2/3 of the book are where the changes are and for that the transitions felt to me to be a bit more choppy. Portions of the narrative about D12, the Hob and other characters therein helped flesh out Katniss' and her interactions of attachment beyond her and Gale's family that the film omits.

I may not see it again before DVD but I may go ahead and read the final book ahead of the film vs in the weeks leading up to release as I've done the first two. Especially since the last film is two movies.

Saw it last night and was engaged from start to end.

The returning characters are more fleshed out, giving Katniss, Peeta, Effie and Haymitch more dramatic scenes to play with. The rebel tributes were all fun to watch, none of them becoming the caricatures they could so easily become. Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Donald Sutherland, and Stanley Tucci shine in their roles as well.

The movie looked great and the CGI wasn't obtrusive. The fog and the killer monkeys looked great.

I really didn't understand the need for the Jena Malone getting naked scene. I don't even remember if it was in the book.

I was also happy to see that they did show some PTSD in the two of them (Katniss and Peeta) when the other tributes seemed so normalized.

Watched KS the other night. Starrin' Robert De Niro & John Travolta as veterans who were on opposin' sides in the Bosnian conflict. After being left for dead, Travolta's thick accent comes to America to get revenge on De Niro. It wasn't too bad, though a bit unsettlin' for the torture scenes.

Spent Thursday watchin' Thanksgiving themed television episodes from Cheers, Frasier, Family Ties, The A-Team, Scrubs & other shows.

And yesterday I started watchin' the Mystery Science Theater 3000 episodes available on Netflix. Decided to count 'em as movies, since they're a feature length hour & a half each.

Out of all of 'em, "Soultakers" seemed like the one that would suck the least if ya watched it normally.

I may be goin' to see the Hunger Games sequel this weekend...

204. Defending Santa (✩✩) - Live TV - First Christmas movie of the year. It's another TV movie starring Dean Cain. He's got a good thing going but this one wasn't very good even by TV movie standards. It was pretty much a poor man's version of Miracle on 34th Street.

Watched the first three Futurama direct to DVD movies yesterday via Netflix Instant. I've seen 'em in bits & pieces, but it was the first I'd seen 'em all the way through.

I still have one more to go, but I gotta say, I think The Beast with a Billion Backs is the best of 'em so far.

Went to the Carmike for the cheap matinee with my sister & nephews to see Catching Fire.

That movie was freakin' awesome. Only missed a couple of moments from the book, here & there, but its a pretty straightforward adaptation, and an excellent follow up to the first movie.

Lookin' forward to the two movies for the third book.

Only saw a couple of new trailers yesterday, Maleficent and Divergent.

Frozen - Movie Theater - Took my two boys and the wife to see it yesterday. It is simply the best Disney movie in a very, very long time. In fact it might be the best Disney movie, ever. The story is so great, a totally different for Disney. That Elsa wasn't bad or mean but she needed help. Love that the sister save each other in the end and the act of "true love" wasn't what you expect. Some how they managed to make a fairy tale that seems fresh, modern and classic at the same time. Idina Menzel just kills the song "Let it Go", Elsa’s big number is an incredible anthem of liberation, matched by the animators’ spectacular visuals. I dare you to listen and not feel chills.

Futurama: Into the Wild Green Yonder - Netflix Instant
Computer Chess - Netflix Instant
The Iceman - Netflix Instant
Kill List - Netflix Instant

Watched three "new to me" movies Sunday.

First off, the fourth of the four Futurama movies. I didn't care much for it at all...it was actually kinda dull. Out of the four, I think The Beast with a Billion Backs was the best one. After watchin' the movies, I'm actually hesitatin' on continuin' with the series.

Followed that with Computer Chess, which was just about to start showin' at the Ritz as I was leavin' Austin back in August. When I saw it was on Netflix, I thought I'd check it out. Filmed in black & white and set at a computer chess tournament in the early 1980s, it starts off with a documentary kind of feelin' to it, but as it progresses, there's no place for the cameraman to be with the story they're tellin'. Ah, well...

And the third movie Sunday was The Iceman, based on a true story of a Polish hitman who killed over a hundred people from the mid 1960s to the 1980s. Starrin' Michael Shannon, Winona Ryder, Chris Evans & Ray Liotta, it was actually pretty good. Reminded me a bit of Liotta's GoodFellas. I'm really beginnin' to like Michael Shannon, too.

Spent yesterday catchin' up on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Arrow & The Blacklist via HuluPlus.

This mornin', I watched the 450th "new to me" movie of the year, Kill List. This is another that I missed at the Alamo Drafthouse. It only played for a week at the South Lamar location at the same time Slaughter was openin', so I couldn't get a night off to go see it. One show a night, for six nights...

The movie itself was bizarre and disturbin', tellin' the story of an out of work veteran who becomes a hit man for hire with his best friend and is given a list of targets. And with each kill, he becomes more and more disturbed & violent.

Rewatchin' Skyfall via Netflix Instant now. Love this movie.

96. Drive: B-
97. Hunger Games: Catching Fire: B+
98. War Horse: B

I'm rating it a B for cinematography, acting and the score. Honestly I'm not sure what the point of the story was. The story starts with a late teen farm boy and his attachment to the horse in a similar manner one would a dog. Throughout the story Joey the 'War Horse' finds various ports of harbor during the war. His beauty, strength and loyalty are his saving graces. Forging interesting and loyal relationships along the way at each place. Eventually coming full circle when the now 18yr old boy can enlist and Joey stumbles into their trenched area of fighting with the Germans. They then both go back home to the farm. Again, I'm not positive what the point was? Love endures? Strength prevails? You can go home again?

It was in the book, described with marginally more detail actually. She slugs Peeta in the arm in the book to "wipe that grin off his face". She has some internal monologue about it that I don't quite recall with specificity. It played out as best it could for a PG-13 rating.

Futurama: Into the Wild Green Yonder - Netflix Instant
Computer Chess - Netflix Instant
The Iceman- Netflix Instant
Kill List - Netflix Instant
Daydream Believers: The Monkees Story - Netflix Instant
Bad Kids go to Hell - Netflix Instant
Dragonheart - HuluPlus
Dragonheart: A New Beginning - Netflix Instant

Four more movies to add to the list...

Watched a made for tv movie about the Monkees via Netflix Instant the other night. I'm a fan of the group, and watched the tv series in reruns back when I was a kid, and I've even seen 'em in concert, back in '86. "Weird Al" Yankovic opened for 'em.

But this movie was kinda dull. It looked cheap, name dropped folks like Jimi Hendrix, the Beatles & Jack Nicholson, but it didn't go much into details. Just seemed to gloss over a lot of what must have been goin' on back then.

BKGTH was okay. I haven't read the comic, but it seemed like an odd idea about prep school detention where four of the richest kids conspired to kill a landowner and believe that his ghost is out for revenge. On the plus side, there were boobs and Ben Browder & Judd Nelson had supportin' roles.

And I've finally been able to see the two Dragonheart movies! The first one was pretty good - Sean Connery's voice work in particular was well done. And the effects weren't too bad for the era. The direct to DVD sequel looked too cheap, though, in comparison. Still, worth watchin'...

Watchin' last night's episode of Arrow now...not sure what the next movie will be.
