Discussed more in the review thread, but this is pretty much what the first Wolverine movie should have been.

I really enjoyed the film and don't agree with the critics the third act is a let down. I don't disagree it feels familiar(IM end with Iron Monger) a bit but don't feel it's out of place. They flow into the reveal of that battle. I could've used one more real good ninja throwdown but really it's a great character piece and I hope it does as well as it deserves to. I wrote a bit in the review thread as well here.

Not sure how big of a story the Oscar Grant thing was outside of the Bay Area, but with the Zimmerman Trial and the recent protests, it did bring back some harsh memories of that fateful Morning on New Years Day 2009.

Leaving this movie, I was left with the question of why did this need to be a movie? It was a straight to the point account of Oscar Grant's death but it felt like more could have gone into it. I think if they wanted the movie to be a little longer (It was less than a hour and a half) they could have delved into the protests and the trail of Maserle.

I did love the performances though from Michael B Jordan and Octavia Spencer. I even liked Diaz' portrayal of Grant's girlfriend.

128. Upstream Color (✩✩✩) - Download - I almost gave this a "Not Rated" because I couldn't follow the movie well enough to give it a proper grade. It's an independent film made by Shane Carruth, who brought us Primer. More thoughts in this thread.

Had the house to myself Friday night, decided to watch Meryl Streep in The Iron Lady. I wasn't too impressed, to be honest. Margaret Thatcher was an old woman who went a bit nutty with grief & political retirement...? Okay. And? Seems to me her politics were glossed over quite a bit, with two big events and a montage of her dancin' with other world leaders of the era.

Not an impressive biopic at all.

Had the house to myself last night, too, and decided on Stallone's Judge Dredd. Holy shit, Karl Urban's movie was so much better than this one!

Came out to Alamo Slaughter today, started a three-movie marathon with Pacific Rim 3D, since I only saw the 2D version when it opened.

Got a ticket to see Fruitvale Station in about an hour.

And I'll be followin' that up with my second viewin' of The Wolverine, this time in 3D.

Despite having only read two issues of the comic, and not the full story at that(it was in the $.50 box), I went and saw this. Hey, I like to support the medium even when I know going in what I'm likely to find. That said, I admit the C+ grade is a bit on a curve most likely cause the expectations bar was so low. The previews tell you it's essentially a parody or riff on MIB meets Ghostbusters. It wasn't trying to be Batman Begins or The Avengers. If you thought that going in you didn't understand what the previews advertised.

It's only 1:40m and was a quick watch. Five whole people were in my showing. However, 2 20-ish guys really loved it the most. Maybe they'd had a few beers at concessions before coming in? It's not for everyone to spend $8/11 dollars on, but maybe a $1 Redbox for something to pass the time for some.

Rope (1948) ★★★

Rather enjoyable. The last 10 minutes are especially good. It looks like a modern film at times, but it's just a little too boring to be a Hitchcock masterpiece.

This rating thing is hard. It keep noticing how some otherwise mediocre movies are made as cash grabs, which makes them more unlikeable, and they're all almost the exact same movie too, which is lame, but individually as just movies they're not exactly bad either.
Also I have only vague recollections of some of the movies I've seen this year.

This Russell Crowe and Meg Ryan film from 2000 has been bouncing in my Netflix queue for some time. Crowe plays Terry a hostage negotiator for Ryan's(Alice) husband Peter who was working to build a dam in a South American country. The dam would free up land to build an oil pipeline. What used to be the countries Marxist "freedom" fighters from the 60's have had to adapt and change to a post Cold War global situation since the 90's. A mere 10yrs at the time the film came out. So kidnapping for ransom was how they now fund themselves but it's mentioned they don't really hold much of a political sway anymore, it's about the drugs they run. I found that some of the acting was a bit over the top while trying to emote their frustration and anxiety at times. The actress playing the sister especially. David Caruso playing a badass just never works for me. The kiss Terry gives Alice, and which she tenderly takes, doesn't feel organic. You get Terry was drawn to her but didn't' feel that necessarily in return....especially as you're both working to save her husband. A decent movie but not one I'd rewatch.

Cheap Thrills - employee screenin'

Well, I woke up early today to get over to the Ritz for an employee screenin' of Cheap Thrills, which Drafthouse Films bought durin' SxSW for distribution.

Kinda awkward, though, since it was me and a bunch of folks from the corporate office in the theater...

...anyway...

Craig is down on his luck, with a wife & new baby in a home that has an eviction notice on the door. The same day he promises his wife he'll talk to his boss about a raise, he's "downsized" from his job as an oil change mechanic. Stoppin' at the bar to get a drown his sorrows, he's reunited with his high school buddy Vince, an ex-con who works as a collector for a bookie.

After a couple of drinks, the two men wind up hangin' out with Colin & Violet, because they have money, and offer up various sums of cash for increasingly lewd and/or rude behavior.

And things just go downhill from there, as the two men continue with the games & pranks that up the ante as the night progresses.

For sure, this is my new favorite David Koechner movie. He plays Colin, the coke-snortin' host who is constantly throwin' fifties & hundreds around.

Ethan Embry is damn near unrecognizable as Vince.

Definitely one of the better movies that Drafthouse Films has acquired for distribution.

The Beast of Yucca Flats

THIS IS SO GOOD. Only confused as bad as aspects are ineptly made, however successfully because happy accidents. Humour on the movie. Narration does undoubtedly seem pretentious in a very superficially aesthetic glance, but is a perfectly unintrusive, effective aspect of the narrative. Cinematography is darkly amusing whilst music is normally good, that is, there is no ineptitude that turns it refreshingly humorous. It all fits together tonally, aesthetically, and story-wise. Original small movie. A surreal nightmare.

People on the IMDB board seem to like it too, despite the unfortunate reviews in the same place. I'm not anti-fun.

130. Jack Reacher (✩✩✩✩½) - Download - I was expecting a generic action thriller, but what I got was an excellent thriller with one of the most interesting and compelling characters I've ever seen. The only thing keeping this from a perfect score is the last act, which did descend into generic action.
