The Jensen Project - DVD
Risky Business - free admission
Screwballs - free admission
Stay Tuned - free admission

Kickin' off June with four movies in two days!

Started TJP DVD yesterday, and it took forever to finish it today, just because it was such a terrible thing to watch. I got it out the five dollar bin at Wal-Mart and LeVar Burton was in the cast, but still...terrible, terrible feature.

Went to the Ritz for three movies, and when I got my tickets, I made sure to have the same seat for all three. Two of 'em were part of the Summer of '83 series the Drafthouse is runnin' this month.

I can see how Risky Business made Tom Cruise a star, and they passed out sunglasses before the movie.

Followed that up with the Canadian-produced teen sex comedy Screwballs. Wound up gettin' an autograph from the film's producer after.

And then Stay Tuned, the '90s John Ritter comedy, which I've seen in bits & pieces, but never all the way through. I especially liked the TNG parody and the Salt-n-Pepa music video, which got applause from a guy in the audience when the dancer hit the remote's mute button.

Re: Movies Seen In 2013

Behind the Candelabra - HBO - This movie was incredibly informative and insightful into Liberace life. However as entertainment, it was boring, slow and insipid. Michael Douglas gave an amazing performance as Liberace, without being too over the top or hint of parody. Frankly, I didn't believe he had it in him to pull off a character like this. Michael Douglas acting range is limited at best. In fact everyone gave really good performances, sorry they were wasted here.

50. Hangover III: C-
51. Now You See Me: A
52. Boot Camp: B-
53. Green Zone: C
54. Ninja Assassin: B

I found this to be an enjoyable if forgettable action film. About a league of assassins through the centuries that steals children early on and raises them to be master assassins. The story focuses on one individual who found his humanity, his heart and soul through love with a female there. She longed for something more and her attempt to flee was seen as betrayal and she was killed. These assassins are used all over the world by various high paying clients who pay the same fee for a killing, 100 pounds of gold. The only actor I instantly recognized was Naomi Harris of James Bond/Pirates fame. She carries all the heavy lifting in this film. Her role and frankly the undercurrent of the film reminded me of Blade, Naomi was the role of the hematologist doctor who suddenly finds out the world is stranger than she knew. Ninjas here are treated by the cast as outlandish an idea as vampires.

As I watched this thought came to me, Kevin Feige I hope you find this: Naomi Harris for Misty Knight at some point.

99. Now You See Me (✩✩✩✩½) - Theatre - I was really looking forward to this movie and I wasn't disapointed. Great cast, a bit of sensationalistic summer fun, a good story and I quite enjoyed the twists and insights into magic tricks and the long con. If you're a fan of the British series Hustle, then you'll like this. The reason I didn't give it a perfect score was because it did handwave away a few of the tricks, making the movie seem a bit too fantastical in parts.

100. After Earth (✩✩✩½) - Theatre - Comments here, but in short, I didn't think it was a bad movie and I think that a lot of the hate is just beause it was directed by Shyamalan.

Blu-ray: 6

Four more movies the last few days...

Watched TAM on DVD for the first time. I liked it, pretty good drama and still relavent even though it was made forever ago.

F&F 6 peeved me off, because I feel like I'll have to rewatch Tokyo Drift again before the seventh movie comes out. Dammit. Other than that, it was kinda awesome.

NYSM was a very fun movie with a great cast. Certainly the better of the two magician movies to come out this year.

AE wasn't as terrible as I was expectin', but it still wasn't very good. Will Smith's flat monotone voice and lack of contractions when he talked about drove me up the wall.

Ah, well, at least it was free.

Two new movies open this weekend and there's an employee screenin' for Man of Steel to look forward to next week...

This Brad Pitt & Angelina Jolie spy vs spy action film was enjoyable. Predictable but good. It's kinda set up to allow for sequels but they clearly decided not to do that. Never got around to this, can't believe it took me this long to watch it, glad I did. Good to watch once, not one I'd want to own though.

Re: Movies Seen In 2013

V/H/S ★★ - Too varied to be any kind of compelling narrative. There were a couple of segments I enjoyed, but very forgettable overall.

The Oranges ★★★ - better than I thought it was going to be after reading some of the reviews. The talented cast and some funny scenes elevated this above the normal Lifetime movie.

Peter S. Beagle was in Austin last week, and hosted four sold out shows in three days of The Last Unicorn. I couldn't get a ticket, but I did get to meet him and get an autographed copy of the movie on blu ray.

I thought it was a cute movie, remindin' me of other animated movies I used to watch back when I was a kid.

And I got to discover another of Rene Auberjonois's roles - he did voice work for the talkin' skull in the movie. So, now I have a new avatar.

I went into work early yesterday to see The Internship, the only new movie playin' at my theater. Its a total blowjob for Google, where Vince Vaughn learns about a job opportunity at Google by googln' Google on Google. Google.

...ugh...

I guess if ya watch the trailer and any of it seems funny to you, go ahead and watch it. Why not, but I wouldn't want to pay to see it.

Went out to the Village this mornin' for a double feature.

I watched STID for the fourth time, first time in 2D. I missed the 3D presentation. Its still an awesome movie, though.

Followed that up with The Purge. Pretty good movie, if a bit too racist. Some good scares, dark humor, and a nice twist in the end. And there's a Texas shoutout durin' the end credits.

Got a plan to go to the Ritz tonight for the Summer of '83 movies...

Frankenweenie - ★★★ - Not as good as Corpse Bride, but I still thought it was interesting. I liked the horror movie homages, but it didn't quite hold my attention very long
