I don't think it was necessary, but I think it was a valid option, and fortunately it worked out great. It would be hard for new characters to have the connection with the audiences Kirk and company have, and I think it was nice to include Nimoy as a way to link this with the rest of the franchise.

By the time DS9 ended a reboot was required because there the Dominion War's aftermath was so all-encompassing. You couldn't really set a Trek show set in the Alpha Quadrant without being a continuation of DS9 which was never a favorite with the higher-ups.

So I understand the need for a reboot. But I don't like the fact they chose to reboot it as a movie. I sure don't like the way they did a remake/reimagining of the TOS and characters, if it was a remake of TNG that would've been at least watchable (I am not a TOS fan).

Always loved this attitude.

I'm a huge fan of TOS, my favorite, but I'd have been there if they had rebooted TNG, made a continuation TNG, DS9, Voyager or Enterprise movie. Because I like Star Trek.

Nice! The Cage still holds up as excellent, intelligent science-fiction. When I finally impregnate a female I'm gonna raise the spawn on TOS, TNG and DS9. I'll tell them scary bedtime stories of the Abrams film to make sure they behave .
