Brett Ratner will direct Trek XIII. Hey, it can't be any worse than XI.
Abrams? Couldn't they have handed it to someone who'll do less damage, like Uwe Boll?

We're missing the really important implication of all of this:

Simon Pegg in a Star Wars movie.

God forbid Abrams make Star Wars into something people want to see, again.

Re: Abrams turns Star Wars because of his "loyalty" to Trek

I'm optimistic about this movie mainly because they hired Arndt first, and had him do a detailed story treatment (maybe even a script) before they hired a director. That tells me they're just looking for someone who can do dynamic visuals, more of a hired gun, rather than a director who's going to help craft the story itself.

That tells me they're doing it the right way. Story first. Then hire a well known geek director who loves Star Wars. JJ isn't producing, he isn't making it "his" story. He's just stepping in to direct. Works for me.

Likely means he's done with Trek.
He's finished ruining Star Trek so he can now move on to Star Wars and make the prequels look like masterpieces.
How will he ever lobotomize so many people?

So what's the problem with Abrams doing both Wars and Trek, as long as the scheduling works?
Is that's what happening, though?
No reason it shouldn't be.

Abrams isn't being brought in by Disney to take over, revamp and manage Star Wars, as Paramount has done with Star Trek. He's being hired to direct a movie.

You'd think Trek fans would have a better grasp of the whole "alternate timeline" thing.
QFT... you can complain about many things in the movie, but this always puzzled me.

The Butthurt is strong in this thread!
I'm glad he's being considered as director of Ep VII. Hopefully he'll do the same treatment he did to Star Trek: to get rid of the annoying fanbois.

Well, now he's thrown away Star Trek like the abused, uncared for whore it was to him and gets to make the movie he's obviously been actually wanting to make. Meanwhile. maybe we'll get a director that actually gives a fuck about Trek for NuTrek III.

Everybody wins.

How have I never seen that before?

Anyway, I think JJ Abrams is a solid fit for Star Wars. The franchise incest does bug me a little bit though, I mean c'mon, these are the two big franchises.

After the prequels I didn't expect much out of the upcoming films, so I'm not worried about it. I'll check them out in theaters of course to help avoid spoilers... honestly if it wasn't for the 100% chance of getting spoiled before then I would probably wait for a Blu-ray release. I really don't get why anyone would want to be spoiled. Why would you deny a piece of fiction the chance to surprise you? Is that scary or something?

If I were in control of Star Wars, personally I'd let Seth MacFarlane and Ronald D. Moore both make a pitch and go with whichever one I liked more. But hey, that's just me

Trek was pretty dead, and while I don't love everything about it, the reboot really breathed new life into it. It could have gone so horribly wrong in so many ways, and it didn't.

And you both - as well as others in here - need to pull back on the reins of your fannish devotions and/or criticisms. Each camp - whether it be Star Wars, classic Trek, or Abrams Trek - has it own sources of shame regarding the way they interact with other devotees. Accept it and let's move on.
