One hands over reins, not reigns.
This is important.

Or maybe they meant: 'hand over reign' ? Language, eh. What a bummer.

And no.

Oh please. Star Trek (2009) was a love-letter to Trek and the fans.
More like "Bend over and grab your ankles..."

JJ Abrams and his writing team have lavished the kind of care and attention that the Trek property hasn't seen since the days of Nicholas Meyer and Harve Bennett.
By turning it into Paramount's version of Star Wars. Trek 09 was enjoyable as a generally noisy, shallow action flick full of run and jump and "pew pew pew". At best it's Trek-lite.

The difference is, Abrams has managed to turn Trek into a tentpole feature.
By sexing it up, dumbing it down, and throwing in a ton of fake lens flares.

So no, Abrams isn't going to lose the Trek property, he'll leave it on his own terms.
You're probably right, but it's a shame. Trek could be much more than what it has been turned into. And produced on a faster schedule.

So, with 27 responses so far there's unanimous disagreement with the OP.

Impressive.
Impressive maybe in the sense that it showcases the strength of the Cult of JJ and how fashionable it is to hate everything that came before his "interpretation" of Trek.

That's an impressive load of crap.
Under no circumstances does liking Abrams' Star Trek mean hating what came before.

There was four years between INS and NEM. Obviously the length of time between films has absolutely NOTHING to do with quality.
Indeed. The seven year gap and astronomical difference in quality between Nemesis and ST09 is proof enough of that. It also shows that people are almost always willing to give a franchise another try if you can offer them a quality film, even after epic boondoggles like Final Frontier and Nemesis.

Agreed, I love all incarnations of Trek, including ST09...

(emphasis mine)

This is what your thread was really about, wasn't it - more of the same lofty proclamations you've made before, about what is or is not "appropriate" for inclusion in Star Trek? Weren't those all, in fact, merely your opinions on a particular subject or subjects?

Ian, how old are you? Or, perhaps more to the point: in what year did you first start watching Star Trek? Which movie or series?

And how does all of that make it your place to tell everyone what sort of Star Trek fans they are?

(Hint: It really isn't your place at all. Your opinion is worth just as much or as little as the next person's; you might as well accept that, because continuing to harangue people about how wrong they are isn't the least bit likely to motivate them to come around to your way of thinking.)

I'm a fan of classic Trek and current Trek. I think the majority here are too. Go figure.

I love how, in the absence of any hard news, this forum has been largely kept alive by Spock/Uhura/Kirk fanning threads and the countdown, and now all hell breaks loose.

What took so LONG? I'm surprised it's this soon, to be honest with y'all.

Movies take years to make. Especially ones as tech-heavy as Trek films are. The gap of four years in between films does not seem surprising at all.

Amen. And it should be clear now that, as far as Ian is concerned, this was not really about the scheduling at all. That was just another excuse to bash the new direction, pine for the previous regime, and, once again, suggest that anybody who likes the reboot is somehow spitting on Gene Roddenberry's grave.

For the record, I have been a Trekkie my entire life, have watched at least two of the earlier movies this week, and am hard at work on my umpteenth Trek novel . . . so don't tell me I "hate" the old stuff just because I don't think a four-year gap between movies is a crime against the Federation!

Hell, for someone who "hates" the old stuff, I sure watch a lot of it!

I've never been in a cult before. COOL! Excellent...

(For those who are already members of the Berman/Braga Cult, let me interpret my previous comments for you: "KEWL! We are pleased...")

I'm off to learn how to chant...

While I certainly agree with everybody who said that three years isn't much of a wait, I wonder what's wrong with the Manny Cotto/Reeves-Stevens suggestion? I thought these were the writers the fans liked?

Plus, no more Abrams, no more lens flare.

And no, that doesn't make me a member of the "hate the reboot" crowd, I'm just curious, is all.
