For the record, I do have the same job my father did and I fully understand why some people do follow their parents footsteps. If I grew up on a starship, I could see myself wanting to join starfleet. But although I followed my father into teaching, he didn't follow his father into working for the phone company and my grandfather didn't follow his father into making fur coats and my great-grandfather didn't follow his father into baking. I can't go back any further than that--which makes it even less likely that someone can play their ancestor 150 years ago.
I don't know. My next door neighbors belong to a long line of firefighters. Five generations so far. And, of course, there are family farms that go back many generations as well.

How long have the Picards been in the vineyard business?

No. Ladies and Gentlemen I have it right here: Homonym - one of two or more words spelled and pronounced alike but different in meaning.

Now... Take him to Detroit!

Oh don't get me wrong, a few people following the family business is one thing and is and will probably still be common in the future. Inheriting the family business even more so.

My complaint is with everyone's identical grandfather also having been a starfleet officer.

Mogh, quarreling with Ja'rod.

Kang and whichever Trill Dax is in at the time drinking blood wine and swearing in Romulan.

Cadet Tuvok. 'nuff said.

Ambassador T'Pol fondly speaking of her 60 years marriage with Trip (just because I hate TaTV and reject it from the canon).

Can't we just have a scene where Scott Bakula walks into to frame and punches Scotty in the gut then immediately runs away?
Archer winning a fight? That's completely unrealistic.

How about an ancestor of Ezri Tigan? Played by William Shatner? Can't you just see it?
