Is Cumberbatch playing Colonel Green?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colonel_Phillip_Green

IMO the evidence is mounting up. He says he's "returned."

Cumberbatch mentions that his character is neither good or evil. "He is a complicated character not to be judged by white-or-black, or good-or-evil.

His character is also on a quest to destroy Starfleet specifically and take down the organization from the inside.

This sounds very similar to Paxton (Peter Weller) in Enterprise who was a disciple of Colonel Green.

Coincidentally, Peter Weller is in this film.

Green was a leader of a major faction during the World War III; the group's actions directly led to 37 million deaths. The Enterprise episode Demons reveals that after the war, Green killed hundreds of thousands of victims of radiation poisoning in order to prevent their future mutant offspring from contaminating the human genome. Despite Green's claims that the operation was "humanitarian," this eugenicist action was labeled as genocidal by future historians. Green's ultimate fate still remains unknown.

This does sound plausible. But has it been confirmed that the villain will actually be someone from or mentioned in TOS?

I think the term that the character has "returned" is meant to throw us off. Fans will start thinking of Characters from episodes that may want to return with a vengeance.

I think the "returning" of this character may be within the time frame of this movie. We may see the character banished or exiled at the start of the movie only to return a little later.

Yes, it was confirmed long ago that Cumberbatch is playing a character from TOS.

As for Colonel Green, what the best Abrams and his cohorts could do was a rejected Enterprise storyline? Colonel Green was originally going to be used in the Augments story arc in season 4 of Enterprise, but when they had to creat a role for Brent Spiner, they replaced Green with an ancestor of Dr. Soong's and Green was later used as a cameo in the Terra Prime two-parter.

How did Green get to the 23rd century from the 21st? Only two ways...time travel or suspended animation. We can rule out time travel since the first film was based on that, I don't see TT being used two films in a row. Suspended animation? Plausible as that tech existed back then. But Cumberbatch speaks with an English accent and Green was American. So I don't really see it.

Why on Earth would the casual moviegoing audience (whom Abrams is clearly aiming at) know or care who Colonel Green is, or what his backstory from TOS or Enterprise was? Most if not all of the audience probably have never even seen either show.

It's been explained, and done onscreen numerous times before; a few quick sentences to fill in the audience then we're off to the races.

'Chekov, who is this man? Criminal, sir. Product of late 20th century genetic engineering.' Khan goes on to fill in a few more facts and done. 5 minutes screen-time, tops.

If you go by that logic, you would have to use a newborn baby with no backstory at all as the villain. I mean, EVERYONE has a backstory ... and it will be more or less explained within the movie, weather the character has been in Trek before or not. The audience is not completely stupid, you know?

Sarek's accent was different in STXI than in the original series. Nobody seemed to care. Same story here, I think.

Even assuming Cumby is using his native accent, he could play anyone. Who really cares what he sounds like?

True. Sarek had an American accent in TOS, TNG and the earlier films and nuSarek has a British accent. It's still the exact same character, so I don't see why Gary Mitchell or Garth couldn't have a different accent this time around yet still be the same person.

James Bond's accents vacillate back and forth over the years along with his entire physical appearance yet most people don't seem to care...they know it's the same guy no matter what he sounds or looks like and they suspend disbelief to have fun.

Re: Is Cumberbatch playing Colonel Green?

^ And besides, it's not like anyone else could ever have replicated Mark Lenard's voice anyway. He had a unique way of speaking. So expecting Ben Cross to sound like him would be unrealistic.

Whoever Cumby is playing, he could probably imitate the accent of whoever played it first, but what would be the point? It's not like he's going to LOOK like them, so going out of his way to SOUND like them would be overkill as well. It's like when Anthony Hopkins played Nixon, or James Woods played Rudy Giuliani. They didn't slather on layers of makeup to precisely replicate the original appearance - the point is in the acting, not the visual or aural authenticity.

Cumberbatch is Cyrano Jones!!! He's returned from picking up all those Tribbles on the K-7 Space Station and now he wants to destroy Starfleet from the inside out.... He's the new snack vendor for Starfleet. You eat a Mento, take a swig of Diet Coke and you 'detonate' (explode).
