I believe all 3D does is make cinema tickets more expensive....and crap films like Avatar passably watchable.

Saw it for the third time (2nd in proper 2D) and enjoyed it again... It seemed not as long after the first time. Besides the awesomeness of Gollum and the riddles, I think the Eagles are my next favorite thing... they look great and those scenes are among the most gorgeous in the movie, right up w/Rivendell. It's an interesting contrast between the Wargs and the Eagles in terms if how they look. I guess feathers are easier to model than fur?

I didn't catch some of the riddles. I had to choose between seeing the movie in 3D or seeing it with closed captions and I chose the 3D (I ran into the same problem with Life of Pi). However I will buy the DVDs of both of these movies so I will catch the riddles in The Hobbit then.

I gave the movie an A-. I enjoyed it but not as much as the LOTR movies. I think that after seeing Middle Earth in the three of LOTR movies some of the magic has been lost.

In that regard, I think that the story itself kind of hurts The Hobbit, simply because it's not so epic, and the stakes aren't as high. In LOTR we experienced a Middle Earth on the brink of devastation; in The Hobbit, we're just following a little band of Dwarves around the same landscape, but it doesn't mean as much.

Maybe so but it didn't work that way when I read the books. As far as the books were concerned I actually enjoyed The Hobbit more than Lord of the Rings.

I think one of the major problem was trying to get three movies out of the The Hobbit. I think the story could have easily been told in one (or maybe two) movies and they could have left out the Frodo/Old Bilbo scenes, the Galadriel scenes etc and just have the characters who were actually in the book.

They definitely could have left that stuff out, though I have to say the Galadriel scenes were some of my favorite, and I find the Necromancer stuff very interesting specifically because it's totally new to me.

I think the Necromancer/Galadriel stuff is needed in order to give the story some depth. That's what keeps it from just being "following a little band of Dwarves around."

After all, the book has Gandalf appearing and disappearing apparently for no reason, until at the end he reveals, "Sorry I couldn't be there when you needed me, guys, but my friends and I had to get rid of the Necromancer." To which the natural reaction is, "You got rid of who?" And the story is substantially lighter.

Regardless of how long these films are or how many they are, the first mistake in the film is that it begins with a lengthy prologue. Fine for the the LotR films, and that prologue was carefully written to only lightly touch on historical events while remianing true to one factor: the POV in that prologue is the Ring's. This was a great movie for a number of reasons.

I believe that Hobbit needed no such prologue. Begin with "A hole in the ground there lived a hobbit" and have Bilbo learn much of that back story from Thorin and Gandalf.

I last read the book more than 12 years ago, maybe as long as 20 years ago (I think I read it twice as teenager, and once after that).

I didn't enjoy Life of Pi as much as I could have as I only read the book three months ago so I don't think I will be reading The Hobbit until after all three movies as I don't want to spoil the suspense that comes from me from forgetting much of which is in the book.

I thought the prologue bit was great. Instead of getting two lines off Thorin at Bag End, they actually showed us what happened, and how horrible it really was.

....and the Riddles in the Dark scene is beyond criticism in its awesomeness.

I also liked the prologue, for the background and to help me care about the Dwarves in general. We saw they had a huge community, they had culture, they had something to fight for that went beyond gold. They had a home.

And I still don't have all the Dwarves straight. But I do like that whoever plays Gloin resembles Gimli.
