Starship chess

So I’ve been thinking about Starship Chess, with chess pieces represented by various starships. I’m thinking mainly TNG era because there is more of a variety of ships.

Can you help me out with suggestions?

The Pawns could be Runabouts or shuttles (maybe even Workbees)

The King could be SpaceDock or a Starbase. Or a Galaxy class ship? Or the Queen should be a Galaxy class?

Knights could be Defiant class.

Bishops, maybe Nebula class or Excelsiors? Akira class?

Rooks… I don’t know.

What other ideas or suggestions do you have?

I wouldn't include shuttles or runabouts and instead use the Miranda class as Pawns.
King=Galaxy Class
Queen=Sovereign Class
Knights=Defiant Class
Bishops=Nebula Class
Rooks=Excelsior Class

For the opposing side I would use a mixture of various alien classes.
King=V'Ger
Queen=Borg Cube
Knights=Dominion Battlecruiser
Bishops=Romulan Warbirds
Rooks=Cardasian Galor Class
Pawns=JemH'dar Fighters or Klingon Birds of Prey depending on your preference

I once had a dream of this very same idea only it was just starships in various colors no shuttles.

I had this idea a while back. I remember I wanted Defiants to be Knights because they are so manuverable. I remember I had trouble deciding how to fit other classes. My idea for the King was the mashroom starbase as well, I think that's the easies one to make. You will not be able to fit all the ships in there.

With TNG era ships, I think there are more ships than pieces on the board.

Kings should be some for of station - that would explain their strategic purpose in the game, as well as their (relative) lack of motion. Either something like the Earth Spacedock or DS9 (yes, it is a Cardassian design, but it looks cool). For Queen, I would go with the Galaxy. I agree with those other assignments you have for the Federation side, though perhaps the pawns can be of the Oberth class instead of the Miranda. Also, for some reason I feel like the Excelsior would be more of a Bishop and the Nebula wold be more of a Rook.

What would you use as the pieces?

Perhaps the Star Trek Micro Machines from the '90s?
