Speaking of the ongoing... the solicit for #21 indicates it happens after the movie. The release date is a week and a half before the movie. Is it going to get moved? Or is the solicit wrong? (Or will there be spoilers?)

With IDW publishing, it's safe to assume the release date will be delayed. The last few issues have been released further and further back in the month. We can probably expect that issue (21) to be shipped on the final Wednesday in May or possibly pushed into the next month.

It looks like it's already been pushed back. StarTrek.com is reporting that After Darkness, the post STID arc beginning with issue 21 will star on May 29, 2 weeks after the movie.

Re: IDW Star Trek Ongoing...

A few extra notes from # 19:

- Kid Scotty had Happy Face wallpaper in his bedroom and a couple of antiques - a (Bad?) Toy Robot and a Rubik's Cube. He and his family seemed to be middle class, living in the suburbs.

- Starships were being built on the ground prior to the Kelvin Incident, as seen in the Linlithgow Shipyards.

- Kid Scotty's a Ramones fan.

- The starship Scotty sneaks into looks an awful lot like the TMP Enterprise. More IDW being careless with their art, or a clue?

- The bridge is a different story, with two chairs/consoles flanking the Captain's chair ala TNG.

- Interstellar frieghter captains in the 23rd century keep tiny hula girls on their dashboard.

- Hard to tell whether Scotty's run-in with NCC-0509 happens before or after the 'flashback' sequence of Countdown Into Darkness. If the latter, why is Marcus still a commander and why is he on Earth on the Starfleet Academy commissions board?

- Just how many years was Scotty on that ice planet?!?

It's likely before. Its crew are wearing the same uniforms the Kelvin crew wore in Trek XI while the flashback in Countdown to Darkness had April and his crew wearing the "modern" uniforms.

I guess Marcus could have been on the Academy Admissions Board before he served with April, kind of like Pike in Trek XI. Or maybe they weren't thinking when they wrote the line and didn't realize the mistake they were making in inserting this particular easter egg for the movie.

They do it in the 24th century too - we get a glimpse of a Galaxy-class ship being built on the surface of Mars in TNG: "Parallels" (although I must admit... that wasn't the prime universe!)

Also the Enterprise's saucer was refitted on the ground in San Francisco in one of the Lost Years novels.

He says six months in the movie.

Re: IDW Star Trek Ongoing...

The story does help to fill in some of Scotty's background and his experience on freighter ships but it fails completely to justify his imposition as a chief engineer. Engineering skill justifies a job as an engineer - your chief engineer says fix the ship and you do it - but becoming a senior officer requires leadership skill and good judgment. Scotty, as portrayed lacks pretty much all the skills needed to be in charge.

What's more, the oddity of Keenser being a senior officer is underlined yet again. He's a lieutenant and has spent years as a chief engineer on the Delta Vega outpost. Scotty qualifies from the academy, presumably as a lieutenant in recognition of his years as an engineer on freighters, commits an illegal act of cruelty on a living being, and is sent to Delta Vega as a punishment for 6 months, where he treats his senior officer as a skivvy.

Keenser should have been a petty officer. His treatment in the movies and comics is an ongoing insult to his rank!

^ I had assumed from ST2009 that Scotty was already a lieutenant commander when he "lost" the beagle and was shipped off to Delta Vega. But the comic showed this happened while he was still attending the academy.

It appears in the JJverse, Starfleet hands out ranks like candy.

Hey, here's a silly question: What is the reading order between Ongoing and Countdown to Darkness? Does issue #20 of Ongoing come just before the first issue of CTD?

It looks to me from the previews and summaries like issues 18 & 19 were pure flashbacks, without anything set in the series present, and issue 20 looks to be the same way. So presumably Countdown to Darkness would fall in between the frame story of #17 (also a flashback issue but with a "present-day" frame) and the events of STID.

Although if you go by the stardates, apparently issues 11-13 take place in early 2259 while later ones are back in 2258. So they may not be progressing in linear order.
