^ ah damn, I imagined that the name would be right under the registry, but there is no name on the underside of the saucer. All my theories on this are wrong

...Then again, the viewscreen is supposedly holographic (as we see when our heroes use it for interacting with people - we see those people from the side if the camera looks at the viewscreen from the side). If Riker went on tiptoes when the camera wasn't looking, he might be able to get a peek of the dorsal pennants.

According to the script, Commander Riker verbally read the registry, and ,then using memory recall, identified the ship.

The way the episode was filmed, we are shown the viewing screen magnify, then cut to Riker taking steps forward and looking ahead while reading the registry and calling out the name. We are never shown what he was looking at.

It's pretty similar to how he leans forward to get a closer look at the freighter in "Heart of Glory", and then declares she's Talarian... Apparently because he has now seen the writing on the portside bow.

After re-playing the scene over and over with HD resolution, I am amending what I said earlier. The registry on the hull is NCC-71808.

For the first time, I saw the nacelles and the engineering hull going in different directions.
