I think without the flashlight to guide them they'd have likely died on the moor by slipping on some frosty ground, tripping on a rabbit hole or, as Bond does, wandering onto ice by accident. Being able to see where they're putting their feet trumped the risk of being seen by any survivors. Especially as a fall in your 70's can be pretty nasty.

Now, not keeping any sort of watch for stragglers when they got to safety, that was daft.

Or, you know, they could have just stayed in the secret tunnel and let Bond go out and kill the rest.

And if Bond didn't kill the rest? Where would you rather be, out in the open or trapped in a tunnel?

Worth mentioning who we're talking about here as well, an old gamekeeper who at best might have had to deal with the odd poacher from time to time, and an old woman who, for all that she's head of MI6, we have no indication was every a field operative (she can't even shoot straight). Oh yes, and she was wounded, so add pain/shock into the equation.

Q plugging Silva's laptop in is stupidity beyond belief, two old people well out of their comfort zone using a torch to traverse dangerous ground in the dark might not be the smartest move, but it is at least understandable.

Yeah, no. Even M would -- should -- have slapped the dude for even thinking about turning the flashlight on, mild shock or no. Hell, your basic common sense tells you you're a damned idiot for waving a flashlight in the dark when bad guys are gunning for you. This is Darwin Award level stuff here.

Gunshot (and a fatal gunshot as it turned out) = mild shock?

Horses for courses really, you could argue clambering around on the moors without looking where you're going when there are thinly frozen over pools of water is Darwin level too.

It's a Bond film. Character do dumb things to service the plot.

In an action movie? Yes. Especially since the only problem M was having was walking.

Yeah, the groundskeeper who's been there for decades upon decades wouldn't know where the dangerous terrain was by heart.

I stlil have no idea why he thought that church was any safer than the tunnels anyway. The only reason they'd need to flee the tunnels (prior to the big explosion that they had no idea was coming) was because they knew Silva's men would come looking for them as soon as they realized there were no bodies. But, somehow, the decrepit old church they could see in the distance once the sun was up was somehow safer than the tunnels they likely wouldn't have had a clue even existed.

And yes, we know it's all because that's how the writer's wrote it; that's what the bickering and moaning is about. Or do you really think we believe that the script is a magical construction all its own, and/or that the movie was an accurate documentary of real events?

And this.

Even if the flashlight had been necessary, and it wasn't, so long as the beam was pointed down at a 45-degree angle, away from the house at all times, it probably wouldn't have been a problem. But the guy was waving it all around.

In real life that may be kind of dumb, but in Hollywood you can fall through the ice, have an underwater fist fight with a bad guy, swim down to the bottom, pick up a flare gun, and shoot your way out.

The thing with the flash-light struck me as really dumb too, just a really, really obvious thing you'd think they would have known better to not do. It's attract WAY too much attention. I'd think some moonlight and a degree of night vision would give one SOME level of sight at night without waving around a flashlight attracting attention. But, hell, couldn't Bond have had some night-vision goggles or something in the car? The flashlight just struck me as the story needing a way for the villains to find M.

JUST the flashlight?

AND, WHY would he need the flashlight... when they come out of the tunnel THE MANOR HOUSE IS ON FIRE. Wouldn't that be PLENTY of light?

It's a stupid movie that looks great.

This one might rid us of some of the Mythbusters gang for good.

On a dark night, shining a flashlight through your fingers will let through just enough light so you can see where you're stepping but won't be noticed from a distance. The scene might have worked better if they'd been doing that and accidentally dropped the flashlight.
