Idea for New Series

It would be very exciting for a new star trek series, and almost everyone on this forum and more would be excited about it. But the question is: What? My best idea (so far) is that the third JJ film restores the "Prime" timeline, making a prelude to a new series. The new series would be like 20-40 years after Vojager, in order for members of older series to make cameos. It might be about a federation ship finding a spiecies, perhaps in a new galaxy or deep in the Beta Quadrent or something, that is like the federation, making an allience of planets. That species and the federation could be seperated by a big alien power, completely blocking them of all contact until the pilot. Any thoughts or revisions?

Whatever the new series turns out to be, I can guarantee you that it will not be set in the old continuity, will not take place after Voyager, will not have cameos of old characters. In other words, it will not be more of the same stuff that people got tired of the last time.

I wouldn't be surprised if that's what happens. It does seem like there's some philosophy afoot that 'timelines want to repair themselves" and once the movies are over after the third (?), the original need for providing a free and clear playground will be gone, because those characters are not going to be played by those actors in any TV series unless it's animated and they can be played by voice-alikes.

That way the third movie could end with some kind of "re-emergence" of the "correct" timeline and provide a link to a TV show timed to coincide with the third movie (and announced after the upcoming one definitively proves the franchise's viability by being another big hit).

If it's live-action, the characters will be different, so the problem that "we've already seen these stories" will be gone. But if the TV series is animated, the Abrams characters can be used, and then re-merging the timelines has a lot less value.

Such as: Introduce at least one new character who will become the lead of the TV series, or the Spock-type "alien other" character who is always such a major draw. That will help alleviate the main problem (other than budget) of a live-action series, that the characters have no name recognition.

The issue of people being tired isn't an issue anymore. The people who got tired of the UPN series are not the same people as would be watching a new series, or even the same people who are watching Abrams' movies. The audience for a new series won't necessarily even know that there are two realities in play, or be able to tell what continuity is being followed, unless the third movie comes out and tells us what's happening - such as by having a character state, "ta dah! the timelines have now re-merged!" Which to the average audience member will just be meaningless technobabble anyway. Only the core fans will care/argue over that issue.

Cameos of old characters are perfectly possible, if whoever is making the show (most likely Orci) decides that's an interesting idea. Considering the age of the TOS actors, and that many have passed away, the roles would more likely be recast. Another element that fans will appreciate more than new viewers.

But post-VOY does seem unlikely. Why leave the 23rd C when it's been working so well? (Other than the inevitable time travel episodes of course. Which could involve characters from the other series, played by the original actors or recast.)

See, the 23rd century is interesting and nice and there is a huge gap between ToS and TNG, which makes for an ideal TV series, but we already know what happens after the show, so no new major species or threats can come, or they would be mentioned on TNG/DS9/VOY such as the Dominion, Borg, or even Ferengi. Plus the last prequal series turned into the disaterous Enterprise, but that may not be relevent. Enterprise could make new alien species since it was so long before the other series, before even the Federation. The only problem with Enterprise was everything except some of the actors and the idea to show the first starship and how the Federation formed.
EDIT: BTW instead of post-voyager, I meant post-Nemesis.

There also huge gaps in the 23rd century itself to play with. If you imagine the Federation (briefly) to be like the face of a clock. The Klingons are at the 12 o'clock position, and the Romulans are at the 1 o'clock position. That the little wedge that Kirk's ship spent it's time in. The vast majority of the Federation in the 23rd century is untouched as far as stories go. First contacts, explorations, battles, little personal problems among the crew.

True, you wouldn't be able to do "oh my God, the Federation is going to be destroyed." But that is really okay with me, I won't miss that tired story cliche.

Sure they can be, many of the best stories involved species that we only saw once. Plus there was a important Denobulan character in the 22nd century, one hundred years, two hundred years later no mention of that species. Several brand spanking new species can be introduced in the 23rd century, and the fact that they are never heard of in the 24th is meaningless. Some could be major allies or villains.

If (hypothetical) there were a series set in the 25th century, how much time do you think would be spent on the Dominion, the Borg, the Ferengi, the Cardassians, or even the Klingons and the Romulans?

but i have something clear in my head,i want the series to be after VOY and Nemesis,in that timeline,maybe the Uss Titan with Riker and Troy,and let the Enterprise and Voyager make many appearances in it. maybe the Story of Species 8472 Alpha Quadrant invasion.

I would love a 23rd century series. Yes, the writers would have to avoid the lure of throwing in the Borg or whatever, but their is easily enough material to work with thanks to the Klingons and other groups. Also, it would be cool to see them explore races that haven't featured heavily in other series, such as the Tholians.

If they ever do a new series, I imagine it'll be another TOS reboot. Whatever they do, which continuity it's in or what era or whatever doesn't matter. All I'll care about is whether it's GOOD or not.

I don't think anyone was bored with Trek and the direction it was taking.The principal weakness of Trek are the meandering wasted episodes such as endless holodeck episodes which just kill the audience interest. I think that was a phenomenon that begun with TNG when it was a new piece of tech that the writers enjoyed playing with which became a dull format. That got worse and worse until by the end of DS9 and Voyager there were endless rehashed episodes until they knew something had to change. Sadly their creativity was so dried up by then that Star Wars were doing prequels so they did one and ruined themselves by screwing up the entire premise. Sorry, Enterprise didn't work, that was why they kept changing the format until eventually it collapsed... audience figures were poor and it was cancelled before it made 7 series. It failed and killed the franchise. The JJ movies are NOT STAR TREK. It's an interesting movie, a guilt pleasure based on flashing lights and CGI, the plot was non-existent. It was a dumb movie and the lowest common denominator sci-fi. For Trek to really survive it needs a series to develop the characters (can't do that properly in a movie, hence rehashing old characters in a revised setting). A new series will have to be in the original universe or it's not star trek any more than a new Starsky and Hutch series would be based on the comedy spin-off movie instead of the original series. The problem was that the formula was done to death so even the writers burnt out on it... long before. So a new angle needs to be found but that's far from hard. How about a weekly episode featuring a completely different cast, each story featuring an interesting angle from guest writers and featuring only non-Starfleet people, the normal people living in the ST universe so you have a Trek version of the Twilight zone but with sci-fi replacing pure fantasy. How about taking another approach, base a series on a sub-culture such as Section 31 and SF intelligence having them fight a quiet war in secret. How about the Temporal police cleaning up damage caused by time travel accidents (lots of nice guest slots and crossovers). How about a series based on a TOS Connie which is long retired and now refitted as a commercial freighter with a crew of merchants bumming around the galaxy on the seedier side. How about a huge space opera series, one story told over the whole series, the story could be about the death of a species or the birth of a whole new form of intelligence? How about a walk through the eyes of a Star trek fan who fantasizes him/herself into the actual universe so that the story is vague about which version of reality is the real one? These are just off the top of my head. Trek isn't coming back as a cash cow because there's not enough fans left to welcome it. It needs to come back fresh and interesting and intelligent, just like TOS was and like TNG was getting to in the middle of the run. It can still work, it just needs to be given a proper chance by creative people, not studio hacks

The novels feature the Titan having Tuvok on board if that interests you. No 8472, but a lot of Borg stuff. The Destiny trilogy by David Mack might interest you based on what you seem to post. It focuses on characters from all the series save TOS (including Enterprise worked in cleverly via relevant flashbacks) interacting to fight a Borg invasion.
