Sexy spines

Book spines, of course! We've had a few best/worst cover threads, but none about which books look best on the shelf.

My vote for favorite spines goes to the Typhon Pact novels. Very nice colours, reminiscent of the DS9 DVD box sets (the UK ones, at least). I also like the post-Nemesis TNG font used for "Star Trek"

Followed by the old numbered Voyager novels. They look really smart, IMO.

The thread title made me think we were talking about Battlestar Galactica!

Re: Sexy spines

That did come to mind when I wrote the title.

I also think Trek needs to adopt spine art - where getting an entire book series makes a complete picture. Something like the Star Trek Collector's Edition TNG and TOS DVDs.

The spines of my Cross Cult Star Trek novel collection are the best looking in my shelf, probably the best looking in my entire household.

Too bad I've switched to e-books now.

I must say that I've found the Voyager Spines to have been the best. It's too bad that #'s 9, 19, 20 & 21 didn't have that color box, digital number.

I think the next ones would be the TNG Academy books.

I have found that the variety of different designs and colours over the years makes the collection very attractive on my shelves.

Different colours is great - the first four Typhon Pact books are a good example of that. I don't mind different designs for different series or miniseries. What does really bug me (must be the OCD perfectionist in me) is when the designs are changed part way through - for no aparant reason - the latest example is the new Titan spine - previously it was the third IKS Gorkon novel and before that the Stargazer series. Also to a lesser extent the way David Mack's names appear on the first Destiny novel is different to the other two. I just wish these little things could be consistant. Is it just me?

Not just you, no. It bugs me too.

How'd they change the Titan spine?

They've changed the layout and positioning of the words. "Star Trek" appears above "Titan" instead of next to it, and the title of the book and author appear side by side instead of the title on top of the author.

It bugs me too, as for Vanguard, the first book's spine is different from the others.
And besides, is it me or it is getting worse nowadays ?

Many of the early Pocket novels had dark blue spines. It was an odd moment of exhilaration when we'd suddenly get one in orange, green, white or purple. Often, a b/w magazine, such as "Locus", would feature a tiny sample of cover art but usually the first we'd know of the colour cover of a TOS novel was seeing the book on the "New Releases" shelf of a book shop.
