Who killed Pareses Squares?

This is a subject I've never seen brought up.

Pareses Squares was the second regularly mentioned pasttime in Star Trek. The first being three dimensional chess from the original series.

Yes, there were plenty of other off duty traditions established, but I think Pareses Squares was mentioned so many times during TNG that in their time it was as popular as football is today.

So what happened? Why is it that to my knowledge it was either only mentioned a few times, or never at all, after TNG?

Perhaps our knowledgable local Andorian friend may know something?

I'm pretty sure there were quite a few referances to it in DS9 and Voyager.

Re: Who killed Pareses Squares?

the doctor's holo-daughter from his holo-family died as a result of an accident during a game of parrises squares.

it was never mentioned on DS9 - according to memory alpha, but was referred to in Tsunkatse and Year of Hell on VGR as well as that ^^^

the thing i always hated about parrises sqaures was that they never had the balls to actually invent it and show it properly. i could never get properly excited about people going off to play it when i never knew WTF the damn game was.

Yeah, maybe if they had shown it, I would have cared. I had forgotten it even existed, which shows how much of an impression it made on me.

Gee ... I prefer using my imagination occasionally. Looking at what they wear to play it, the tidbits here and there when mentioned. It's much more fun to create my own idea of what it might be.

Traditionally in Trek, when mystiques are broken down (Klingons, Borg, bunk beds in crew quarters) Trek becomes far less interesting.

Parese Squares was mentioned by Tom and Harry in VOY a few times.

There are no details ever given of how the game is supposed to be played so I really couldn't care less about their using it as a comversation piece in Trek.

not true. it involves Ion Mallets and ramps and you wear padded uniforms and people can get hurt easily playing it.

^ Also, PS depends on there being exactly four players to a team. Any more (or less) and - according to Riker - "you lose the rhythm of the game".

Have there been fan attempts to make a real set of rules for Parrises Squares?

Harry used to play at the Academy. It was mentioned more than once.

With all the Trekkies and Trekkers and minutia nuts out there?

I'm surprised we haven't seen any tournaments on ESPN yet!

I agree. Plus, it becomes a bit of an in-joke, this thing we hear so much about yet never see. Also, considereing how lame ambo-jitsu looked, we're better off having never seen it, I'm sure.

What? You weren't impressed by "the ultimate evolution of martial arts"?

Considering that martial arts evolves into blindfolded men with beeping sticks whapping the crap out of each other while standing on a giant barrel, and humanity evolves into giant horny salamanders, I have to wonder how optimistic a future Star Trek actually portrayed.
