No full series in 2016?

Private Eye are reporting that there won't be a full series in 2016, though aren't saying exactly what will happen instead.

Lest we forget, they were the first people to reveal this the last time it happened, even if they didn't get the specifics quite right.

Re: No full series in 2016?

Are we getting ready to see Doctor Who end, or at least go on another hiatus? The season is starting later than usual this year and if the rumors of true, than no full series next year. Seems like the series is getting a lot more limited than it was when it first started, at least the 2005 incarnation.

Re: No full series in 2016?

While details are thin it sounds like the next series of Sherlock will be being shot next Spring while will push back the start of production on Series 10 so it won't all air in 2016.

The question is will they then use this as an excuse not to air Series 11 until 2018?

So are they suggesting series 10 will air over the winter essentially? Actually assuming that doesn't push series 11 to 2018 I can see some positives to this, it'll mean the Christmas special will effectively sit mid season which would make a change as it'd mean the Christmas special would have to form part of the season arc, even if it was stand alone.

Of course this might also mean no Christmas special!

If Jenna is pregnant, it's a royal baby, so she has to get married and quit the show, or they'll behead her.

Didn't take Rich Johnston long to pick up on it.

Well if the report is true perhaps it'll be a series of TV Movies much like they did with Tennant, perhpas they wanted/needed a bigger budget to do something special perhaps something to do with the return of Gallifrey.

Or perhaps it's something more mundane and Moffat will be busy with Sherlock.

The way Moffat talks about Sherlock 4, it sounds like the scripts are written and have been for some time. So I'm not clear why Sherlock's production should interfere with Who's production unless Moffat is, for some reason, incapable of writing for the last three months of the year.

The Private Eye paragraph that I'm curious about is the one that Bleeding Cool doesn't reprint, the one about the "increased pressure for him to step down from the show. Without actually firing him or anything that would be just gauche."

ETA: Also, it is it not possible -- giving Moffat the benefit of the doubt here -- that this was planned? The Olympics are in 2016, after all, and that certainly will play havoc with the BBC's scheduling.

Re: No full series in 2016?

This could be good.

They no longer have the power to make 13 fantastic episodes a year.

Make four instead, and then bloat them into fat bastards.

Waters of Mars was superb, Planet of the dead was stellar, The other Doctor was a turd, but then you had all that end of time stuff over the course of 5 days. Wow.

If they could repeat that magic, I would be happy.

It's very much Deja Vu All Over Again wandering around the internet this afternoon reading all the same comments people made back in 2011. Regardless of how the BBC may feel on the subject there sure are a lot of people who can't conceive of the possibility of the series carrying on without him and are willing to cut him an unlimited amount of slack.

Are you talking about fandom or at professional levels?

I've read and reread Bleeding Cool's excerpts from the Private Eye article three times now. I feel like it's written to be provocative for one simple reason -- it implies that the decision to make half a season (or specials) comes from Moffat and the BBC has to live with it. However, that completely inverts the actual power structure; Moffat does what the BBC wants and is willing to pay for, and if he doesn't he is replaceable, no matter what fandom may think about the ease of replacing him. I also don't give any credence to an idea floated by Jon Blum this morning on Gally Base that a shortened season 10 came about because Moffat wants to leave and the BBC convinced him to stay with a lightened workload because they don't have a successor lined up. Don't get me wrong, I'd like to see Moffat replaced because I'd like a new "voice" behind the series, but I'm thinking this, if true, isn't on Moffat.

Oh fandom definitely. He needs a rest apparently, even though he just had one two series ago.

The one person I know who works at the BBC and who might hear something ain't saying nothing, which in and of itself may or may not be interesting. (How noncommittal can you get!)

BBC response which is hardly a strident denial...

"It's too early to confirm the schedule for future series at this point, but the new series starts on Saturday, September 19."

I was looking at when Season 6 and 7 and 8 started, and Season 9 is getting a later start than any of the previous years by like 2 weeks. In a non-olympic year, I wonder why that is.

Despite having one episode less* they won't finish shooting until about three weeks later than last year. Possibly that.

*In terms of total running time.
