References to 5, 6 & 7 in NuWho

I've been thinking and puzzling lately about this: there have been references to the first 4 Doctors in NuWho be it events, enemies, companions, etc. But what exactly has been referenced from the time of 5, 6 & 7? (outside seeing them in the line up at the end of "Day of the Doctor")

Sure 5 appeared in the Tardis with Tennent in a mini-episode. And there was a mention of the Doctor's attempts at trying to get back to Heathrow (in reference to Tegan), but I can't think of anything else.

The only thing I can think of for 6 is a brief "walk-on" in Clara's time-stream visions in "In the Name of the Doctor". Granted 6's time didn't last long, so maybe there isn't much to build on.

As for 7, there is even less. In fact, the ONLY thing I can think of is the fleeting glimpse of Ace in the minisode "Clara and the Tardis".

Since these three represent the decline of Doctor Who in the 80s, do writers purposely steer clear from building on their stories since their fan-base is smaller? But is there no threads that could be picked up from them? I for one think that instead of using the Great Intelligence in "the Snowmen" and "Name of the Doctor", that it would have been more effective for the villain to have been Fenric.

Am I forgetting any direct reference to these Docs? Any opinions on how their legacies could be best utilized nowadays?

I'm pretty sure the Doctor has said "brave heart" on a number of occasions. And then there's Human Nature, which was a rewrite of a seventh Doctor story, and Dalek, which was a rewrite of a sixth Doctor story.

Yep. Eleven's love for the fez has origins all the way back to Silver Nemesis.

Come to think of it, maybe thats not such a good thing.

Was Rose Tyler intentionally a rewrite of Ace's character (The Bad Wolf/Fenric Curse thing) or was that just a coincidence?

Perhaps but bear in mind the age of the writers, when asked which is their Doctor i.e the one they remember when growing up it would likely be around the 3rd-4th Doctor era of the show with perhaps a little of the 2nd and 5th. So perhaps it is only natural more referrences come from that period of the show.

Although he drew on something from all Doctors, much of Tennant's performance is based on Davison's (Davison of course being his favourite). The most obvious is that they both tend to keep their hands in their pockets.

The Seventh Doctor's umbrella from Paradise Towers is seen in Journey to the Centre of the TARDIS.

Some have suggested the Dream Lord is based on the Valeyard, although that tends to be open to interpretation.

In Amy's Choice the Doctor mentions he threw the TARDIS manual into a nova, which would have to be either in the Sixth Doctor's time or after, since the Sixth still had a TARDIS manual.

I think RTD was heavily inspired by Ace when developing Rose. A lot of the development and background you see with Ace is related to Rose's. It's more the feel of the character and treating her as a person who grows.

I also think that Eccleston noticing the catflap in "Rose" is a sly homage to the original title of "Survival". That might be a stretch though!

If we're counting the spin-offs, then Tegan and Ace were mentioned on SJA.

In the TARDIS wardrobe in "The Christmas Invasion", some 1980s costumes made a cameo:

Davros had a mechanical hand following losing his one remaining one in Revelation. Which is actually the sort of small detail it would have been very easy to forget/overlook (and certainly fans would have *ahem* handwaved it easily enough, "He cloned a new one" or something). Having the same director likely helped.

Odd, worked for me again when I clicked it. Anyway, it's just the wide shot of said room from said episode. Y'all can Google it.
