Frankly, I think the BSG writers cast her because they were jealous that Rome won Emmys that BSG was nominated for.
It's probably more because she did really
well in Rome, just as Paula Malcomson was no slouch on Deadwood. They wanted quality TV actors and a production that could be compared to ambituous premium cable dramas, much like BSG wanted.
Loved her on Rome, didn't care for her much on Caprica.
