This thread has been devoted to the announcement of the set, tons of questions and speculation about the set, answers and track listings, and finally people ordering it and receiving it.

Pretty soon we are going to want to talk about the contents, what we hear on the CDs. "When I was listening to season 1 disc 4, I noticed that..." Should we open a new thread or threads for that kind of discussion? Or just keep this one running?

I got mine today!! Now, I have to wait until Christmas to unbox it!

Honestly, I have not posted here on the forum in a LONG time... this set brought me out of the woodwork. I haven't bought any TOS media in a LONG time either... since the 2 episode DVDs.

Now I'm ready for La La Land to get into video and release TOS in 8K Ultra High Definition, unmolested, with the original effects, music, bumpers, etc in a limited edition set. I'm so tired of the so-called state of the art restorations in 2K... just old technology. By the time CBS releases all of TNG in 1080p, it will already need to be restored again in 4K...

I can understand your view to a point, but it does boil down to $15 a disc for something that would be impossible to obtain any other way. I don't spend much on my interest in Trek in general in terms of quantity and so I will splurge occasionally for something I really want. Also in real terms this really isn't much at all compared to what I've seen many other people spend on their hobbies and hardly anyone questions it simply because those hobbies are seen as more mainstream.

Unless you're a professional photographer then how much will you spend for a good camera? Well my brother-in-law has bought several cameras over the years and spent lots of money on photo printers and photo paper and other supplies and he is just a hobbyist with his photography. Collectively he has spent a lot more money on his photography interest than I have ever spent on Trek. And lots of other people spend hundreds to thousands on their hobbies with hardly anyone blinking over it.

Isn't camping in the outdoors a hobby of sorts? Of course it is and few question people who spend thousands of dollars on such an activity. And that's just one example.

Anything that isn't directly tied to the essentials of living potentially crosses over into the realm of recreational pursuit. And everyone will have a different value they attribute to that pursuit. One man's pleasure is another's waste of time and money.

The problem is I don't think the original f/x sequences exist anywhere in pristine condition. So in effect you'd have to redo the f/x all over again, either as (good) cgi or investing the time in money to recreate the f/x in somewhat similar fashion as they were originally done, with models and bluescreen techniques. Uh, yeah, I could really see the-powers-that-be ponying up for that.

I will say that that would be an amazing way to enhance the original f/x while retaining the original style of those f/x.

The problem isn't the sequences, but the elements that make them up. The compositing techniques used at the time to combine the different parts of the FX images lowered their resolution, created visible matte lines and flaws, etc., and so they don't look very good in high definition. The problem was worse for TNG because the compositing was done on video, with even lower resolution. But in the case of TNG, all the individual film elements that were combined to make the shots still survived, so they were able to re-composite those elements in HD, essentially recreating the same shots without any loss of resolution from the original film elements (although they replaced elements existing only in video form, like many of the planets, animation, early CGI like the Crystalline Entity, etc. with new CGI). With TOS, however, the original film elements that were used to create the shots (e.g. raw footage of the ship, planets, starscapes, animated beams and energy fields and such) no longer survive, so there's no way to recomposite the original footage. Recreating the shots in CG was the only way they could do it in HD.

^I can scan my own personal 16mm film copies of TOS (I own a dozen eps) at 3K -- and the effects sequences LOOK amazing after the dirt and grime has been removed with PF Clean --- so much better than anything on the Blu-Ray. Clearly the restoration team for TOS didn't have a clue -- probably why the company that did the transfers went out of business after the writer's strike. Given a 35mm interpositive or internegative, you could do wonders -- but with old film it is essential to do an emulsion level scan properly. I suggest using the Northlight 2 film scanner instead of a typical Spirit 2K telecine. The difference is night/day.

Ok! Neil! What is going on at 3:22 of "The Ancient Combat / 2nd Kroykah" in the Amok Time score?!?!? I'm used to hearing a pause there before the fight music kicks up again. Here the fight music resumes abruptly, sort of breaking in on the preceding brass chords.

My theory is this: on the old GNP Crescendo disc, they used a version of the cue that was not the version used in the episode. I don't have "Amok Time" handy to watch, but I vaguely remember that the fight resumes before Kirk is really ready. And this version of the cue shows that thru music. Given that internal "evidence", and everything we've read about the process you went thru to identify "takes" and sync them up etc, that seems plausible to me.

But is it right? The old CD used a version of the cue that is "accurate", in the sense of being from the recording session, but was not the version aired in the episode? And you restored the version actually used in the episode, to this set?

By the way, the improvement in sound quality is really noticeable in this score. I can clearly hear a bunch of percussion right in the "middle" of the mix, that was muddled before. And the "new" stuff (Deep Thought/Message From T’Pring/Pon Farr etc) is incredible.

(And that's just this score!)

Cardboard sleeves (in my experience) have a tendency to end up scratching the disc over time, whereas plastic cases (where the only point of contact with the disc is the hub) don't.

Yes, in the episode the fight music does resume abruptly - there is no pause as heard on the GNP release. I happened to have this episode handy to check.
