Well Bob it's like this. Either these threads are allowed under the TOS of this board or they're not. If they're not allowed they should be shut down immediately. Problem solved. IF they ARE allowed, then the people are offended by them should ban together and petition the admins (Or whoever is in charge) to NOT allow them. If they accomplish this, then again problem solved.
Just because something is allowed by the rules doesn't mean it is right. It's odd how people tend to confuse rule systems with social norms. They aren't the same thing. What is permitted and what is appropriate aren't necessarily the same things.

BUT if they're unable to accomplish that, and the threads continue, then any further discussion like this frankly borders on trolling and yes it SHOULD be taken to TNZ. There's a reason that's a seperate forum.
Why? No one here is being flamed or insulted. This is a thread for discussion, and we're discussing the sexism evident in these threads when it rears its ugly head. If these threads commented more on the talents of the women in question, you'd see very little complaining about it.

Why is it you have a right to post what you want in these threads, but I don't?

Folks it's not that hard. If you don't like the threads, do what I said, petition the admins to not allow them. If they don't do that, then if you are so offended by them, then stay the hell out of them. Establish a zero tolerance policy for inappropriate behaviour in other threads, and if a poster makes inappropriate comments in another thread, deal with those posters on case-by-case basis.
I do not need an edict from on high to influence people's behavior. That's why we're discussing. People shouldn't tone down the sexist comments because there's a rule against it, but because they realize those comments are hurtful and offensive. That's what we're doing: highlighting the true nature of such comments.

But this endless carping here isn't going to solve it. Take it to TNZ if you just want to bitch.
Yes, yes, women wanting to be treated decently is "bitching," I understand. Poor men and their problems.

Get over it.

Fair point, but if people want to come in an make the discussion about the person, personality, skills or dress sense rather than looks then surely people should be allowed to do that, too. If the discussion gets dragged elsewhere, well that tends to happen what ever the thread. Though I seem to remember these threads have been modified and stopped on a few occasions because they obviously make people feel uncomfortable.

You know it's easy enough to put people on ignore and I don't have to listen to it. Unfortunately Robert you're a moderator and I can't put you ignore and you're one of the main ducks in the puddle. Seems to me if you're going to be a moderator you ought to assume more of a neutral stance.

I can see what the tatic is here. Y'all can't or won't try to change the rules, therefore you're simply going to fillibuster the topic to death. Well all right, knock yourself out.

Re: Hope Solo: Babe of the week #31 (July 2012)

From my point of view it isn't anything like that. It's that people have seen something they dislike and spoke out, some in hopes of shutting up someone they thought was particularly bad, others in hopes that people might see what they're doing is actually hurting or insulting or just not quite right. It's a discussion forum, as long as people are going back and forth there's going to be responses, no?

Everyone has a right to express their opinions about these things within the current rules. Chill.

That you don't have access to TNZ explains your mistaken comparison of this kind of discussion to that place, though. Believe me they are nothing alike.

I really don't think people have a problem with that.

Man you said a lot of truth there.

Honestly Bob I really truly don't care if these threads stay or go. If they stop them, it truly won't bother me. What I'm irritated about it, is there is a contingency of very vocal posters (including a moderator) who are being allowed to systematically derail topics with THEIR agenda. If this were any other political agenda, it wouldn't be allowed. For some reason, it is here, and it's distressing because this used to be a fun place to come to get news, entertainment, and just have discussions in general.

There was a specific forum setup for the more political and contentious topics and people were free to go there for those discussions or not. Now it's been drug in here and it just goes on and on and on. I don't care what the topic is, at some point enough is enough.

Yeah there's no trolling here.

And I'm not telling you how to do your job, I was telling you what I thought moderator's roles were.

Yeah there's no trolling here.

My job is to enforce the rules in the forum which I moderate, which is not this one, by the way. I'm just a regular poster in here.

It's not trolling for me to point out that your attitudes are backward, sexist, and offensive.

Robert doesn't moderate this forum. Whether any mod does or doesn't moderate a given forum, they don't forgo their freedom to discuss topics. This thread is getting opinions on women, and on how discussing women goes on here. For some, discussing women in a vein that treats them like cattle is worth critical comment.

Well my bad on you being a moderator in this forum. I just knew you were a moderator.

And what in the fuck did I say that was "backward, sexist, and offensive?" I said I was tired of the arguing and didn't I suggest that you should try to proactive to get them banned all together?

In any event it no longer matters. I've requested my account be deactivated and I'm done.

Carry on.

It might have been the general you, you know, gh4chiefs.

I think you're severely overreacting. Possibly being treated unfairly in a discussion (without any consequence, I might add, it's just a discussion) shouldn't warrant leaving the board forever. If it did, the board would be pretty empty.

Others have already pointed out that people have a right to post their opinion within the board rules even if other posters in the discussion don't like those opinions.

I admit gh4chiefs didn't actually say anything sexist in this thread, and I jumped to conclusions about his intentions, and for that I apologize.

I thought we were trying to help posters understand that this is a co-ed message board and not a Jr. High boys locker room.

This board is co-ed, just like the real world. The attitude that some men are entitled to rate women solely on their appearance results in women only being valued in what they can do for men. Women therefore have no value of their own.

If this rating system is acceptable I want those comfortable with it to know the following. I will quote it directly as I can't say it any better:

It (the BotW thread) also provides valuable insight into the character of some board members, so that other posters may develop accurate opinions of others before interacting with them in other board settings.

Please remember, this thread is open for everyone to read. If you feel comfortable judging women in this way, know that a lot of women are making judgements about you as well.
