Re: Star Wars The Clone Wars Season Five News and Discussion

Well I loved the episode and loved the final moments. Can't wait to see the show officially renewed and see what they do from here. Tim Curry is a horrible Palpatine and that kind of ruined the trial for me. I think the whole thing was orchestrated by Palpatine as a way to push Anakin closer to the Dark Side and also sway public opinion against the Jedi. Not only did the death of civilians in the Temple bombing cause outrage among the citizenry, surely Bariss's speech will be spread across the Holonets and make the Jedi look horrible. The emotion in the animation of the final scenes was amazing. I can see them taking the series past the events of Episode III, showing Ahsoka's return and meeting with Vader. Who knows how that will turn out though.

I've become so jaded with our own military tribunals that I would actually be surprised if that speech was made public.

I don't see how Palps could be responsible for Barriss' actions, though. And she freely admitted she was behind everything. I think he just took advantage of a pre-existing situation.

Hopefully with an impalement.

Similar to bill cosby I also felt like this finale could've been a series finale. I know it isn't, but if it was, I would be pleased with it.
Well, it is the series finale as far as Cartoon Network is concerned, isn't it? Since season 6 will probably be on Disney XD due to the merger.

I thought her rationale was muddled. Before fighting Anakin she says something like the color red (of Ventress's) lightsabers suits her, but then before the tribunal she talks about the Jedi being consumed by darkness.
She only said the sabers suited her; she didn't specify the color.

And is there really some official rule about only Sith having red lightsabers? Is there any reason why a non-evil Jedi couldn't have one? I mean, Mace Windu's is purple.

But overall, I thought it was a great ending for the season. It will be interesting to see if Ashoka comes back to the Order in season 6 or if they do something else with her.
I think it's likely that the reason they did this was exactly what you say, to explain her absence from the Order in RotS. So I don't think she'll be coming back. I think next season will feature her exploring a different path. And that could be intriguing. There must be more to the universe than Jedi, Separatists, politicians, clones, droids, bounty hunters, and outlaws. We haven't seen much of the perspective of rank-and-file civilians. Maybe that could be fleshed out through Ahsoka's eyes.
Regarding the lightsabers, I've never seen a rule determining who chooses what color, but that being said, red has traditionally been associated with the Sith. I think in part because of the particular crystals they use which gives them the crimson hue.

I've only seen Sith, Dark Jedi, or other darksiders use red lightsabers so I'm assuming that it is a color lightside Jedi avoid.

Good point about Barriss's comment. I took it to mean the color but it very well could've been the style of the lightsabers. I do like that distinctive curved hilt.

No need for Palpatine to orchestrate anything there. When your enemies are screwing themselves over, stand back and let 'em. That said, I guarantee Bariss's speech got leaked all over the Holonet.

That reminds me, one thing this series dropped the ball on is showing the mentor relationship between Palpatine and Anakin. They never had time to show it properly in the movies and this should have been the chance to redeem that.
Well, the movies dropped the ball on showing the friendship between Obi-Wan and Anakin. So it all evens out. Besides, how much mentoring is Palpatine really gonna be able to do when his 'apprentice' is offplanet fighting battles all the time?

I don't see how the speech of a terrorist, traitor, and lets face it coward (what with framing an innocent person to cover her crimes) is going to sway public opinion against the Jedi.

That's the whole point. Terrorist. Traitor. Coward. Jedi.

It's all about word association. The same way Republicans have (right or wrong) become virtually synonymous with racism and Catholic priests with pedophilia. And Bariss wasn't the first Jedi to go bad and cause some harm in this war by a long sight (hell, we saw another one earlier this very season). Count Dooku of course is the most visible example of that. The public doesn't have a clue he's a Sith Lord (if they even remember what a Sith Lord is at all) - from their point of view, the Jedi started this war. One bad apple, okay. One bad apple after another after another after another, very publicly messing things up - and this last one a teenage girl - and eventually the whole bunch comes under question.

And the best part is, Palpatine doesn't have to make any of it up. The Jedi make it so easy for him.

I like how Mace says the Force works in mysterious ways.

What he's actually saying is; "Sorry Ashoka, don't be mad at us, it was the Forces fault."

Playing pin the blame on the Force can't be the Jedi way.

Then again when I think about it, that pretty much is the Jedi way isn't it?

Well, there's actually some merit to the idea, though. The Force is supposed to be the cosmic essence binding all life together, so in a way the action of the Force is the collective action of living things. If a large number of people are being influenced or motivated to tend in a certain direction, that would be a shift in the currents of the Force. It's not that the Force causes people's actions or vice-versa, but that they're two different ways, holistic and reductionistic, of defining the same process.

The Dark Side is clouding everything, including everything's judgement. It is growing more and more powerful as events continue to spiral out of control and Palpatine continues manipulating events in his own favour. So to some degree it is the Force's fault as the light side is being overwhelmed by the dark. The Jedi are compromised somewhat to see this. We've known this since Episode I. These are not natural events that are unfolding...and the Jedi, especially Yoda knows that, but they can't really do anything about it.

I've heard similar observations about religion in general. Why did the flaming oil tanker smash into the pet rabbit store? It was the will of Baby Jesus, etc.

Where are people getting that Ahsoka "knows" about Anakin and Padme? From her final line where she says "I know" after Anakin confesses to having feelings of wanting to leave the Jedi? That doesn't quite seal it for me. Because Padme agreed to be her lawyer? I've watched it 3 times already - there's absolutely nothing in this episode that suggests to me that she knows about their secret marriage.

I wished it had been a key storyline. I guess they (Anakin and Padme) only spend brief moments alone together anyway.

It's not just her line, it's the surprised and guilty expression on Anakin's face in response to her line. Well, maybe not "guilty," but the kind of look someone gets on his face when he realizes that someone else knows a secret he's been keeping. That's what told me she was talking about him and Padme.
