On a totally unrelated note, I have been rewatching Season One of A:TLA, and I just watched the Winter Solstice two-parter. This is the episode where Aang first enters the Spirit World and meets Roku. An interesting thing I observed that I never noticed the first time around is that when Aang enters the Spirit World, he meets up with Roku's dragon. The dragon and Aang fly to Roku's Island, but on the way they fly over General Iroh and a bunch of Earthbenders. Iroh sees them! They're in the Spirit World; nobody should see them, but Iroh does.

It's a story thread I feel must have later been dropped, but I wonder what the original intention of that was.
It wasn't dropped, as you'll see when you get to "The Firebending Masters" in Book Three.
I'm not sure how there's a connection. Iroh learned firebending from the Masters, the last of the dragons, but that doesn't explain how he'd be able to see into the Spirit World.

^It's more of an implied connection that an explicit one. One of many things that indicate Iroh knows a lot more than he lets on and is not the fool he pretends to be.

I think a better explanation than his lesson from the dragons is the implication that at some point he'd been to the spirit world. It's been a while and I don't recall where that was but I think it might been in one of the north pole episodes.

Last-minute heads up: Nickelodeon has moved The Legend of Korra to 8:30 PM. It's still on tonight, just 90 minutes later. Apparently this was announced a couple of days ago, but I didn't find out until just now.
Crap. I bet my TiVo didn't catch it. Nick is horrible about reporting scheduling changes to the programming services in a timely manner.

I believe Iroh says something about being to the spirit world to Zhao in "Siege of the North"...?

Just watched this one, and Zhao is actually the one who mentions "rumors of Iroh's trip into the Spirit World," but Iroh doesn't confirm or deny anything.

I'd love to see more of that story, if true.

Back to how this relates to Korra, what's the deal with the Spirit Portal? Korra opened the one in the South in the season premiere, and we have been told there is another one in the North. I'm intrigued by how this might relate to the Spirit Oasis in the North Pole where the Water and Moon Spirits reside. According to Yue, that is the most spiritual place in all of the North Pole. Does it really make sense for there to be another major spiritual place in the North Pole?

Maybe they're one and the same? The ocean and moon spirits had to have come into the physical world from the spirit world somewhere, maybe once through they didn't get very far? I mean they're fresh water fish stuck in a pond, surrounded by a salt water ocean, no?

Re: The Legend of Korra - Book Two: Spirits

Not sure how I felt about tonight's episode. I'm still having a hard time caring about this season's story. I think part of the problem is that I just don't seem to connect with these characters the way I did with the characters in "The Last Airbender," so watching their individual stories unfold isn't all the exciting to me. It didn't help that this episode was completely without Korra until the end (and yay, she has amnesia...).

I didn't mind having a Mako / Bolin starring episode since they haven't had much to do this season, but I would have liked a Tenzin family subplot to go with it. I called the crazy tycoon engineering the war for profit several episodes ago (but I still like him!).

My one big problem is Amnesiac Korra. I *hate* amnesia stories.

I am liking it so far though last night's story only really progressed in the last five minutes but The Last Air Bender had a few stand still episodes too.

Bolin isn't the hero I pegged him for but I guess he never really wanted to be. In the first season he was thrown in it because one of his teammates wanted to be a hero and the other was the Avatar. That plus that love triangle plus being left out at the beginning of this season is a fine enough reason to do what he did in last night's episode, and I wouldn't mind seeing Bei Fong replace him as the chief rock bender.

Yeah, this was probably the least interesting episode of both series', but at least we got to see more of Asami who's been sidelined this season. By the way, do a Google image search for korra asami. There's lots of fan art out there. Then there's Varrick. I pegged him as comic relief. I didn't think he was up to anything, so that was a surprise. This was more of a filler episode, probably a first for either series but next week, we'll get the goods.

It did indeed. I don't really mind when episodes don't advance the plot, but they still have to be entertaining. The Last Airbender's standalone episodes were usually fun, even if they didn't have anything to do with the main story. Bolin is the comic relief on the show, but unfortunately I think he just comes across like a cheaper version of Sokka.

As long as the director of the last movie stays away, I'm cool with it.
