Re: PROMETHEUS - Grade and Discuss

I liked it, but there was quite a bit that I remember being confused by, like parts that felt out of sync or things that weren't explored. I had a hard time finding the relevance the opening had to the rest of the movie until I went home and researched it.

To me it felt more like a reboot for some reason. Will there be a follow-up?

I like the original ending scene because of how it showed Deckard's evolution from a cold hearted killer to a real human being.
He takes off with Rachael in both versions.

You're missing the point. It's the juxtaposition of both scenes. In the beginning, Deckard is alone in a cold dark place. At the end Deckard is with Rachel in an open space filled with sunlight. The original ending implies that we have control over our destinies. The new ending seems to imply that our actions are ambiguous at best.

This has probably been posted, but I don't know how I missed this Link. The fact that David is obsessed with Elizabeth and is conspiring to get Charlie out of the way makes so much more sense to me now. I forgot about him watching her dreams at the beginning of the movie.

After thinking about it, despite his actions, David may be the most relatable character in the movie. Even Dr. Shaw comes across as hopelessly naive.

Knowing Scott's style (particularly from aspects of Blade Runner), it wouldn't surprise me if he intentionally made the one artificial character the most sympathetic over his human colleagues with the movie-going human audience. Even some of the most anti-Prometheus vitriol seen in this thread gives great exception to Fassbender's performance. I doubt it's coincidence at this point.

Re: PROMETHEUS - Grade and Discuss

From the book Prometheus: The Art Of The Film.

For those wanting more of an Alien tie-in, well there is one. I'll have to scan the image and post it, but there is an image in the film under an arch of sorts that depicts the familiar Alien xenomorph in something of a crucified posture. That means the Engineers were aware of the familiar xenomorph's existence somewhere. That means there is a way for that black goo to end up as a familiar xenomorph.

Oh, and the snake thing, or the Hammerpede as the production crew called it, looks crazy in clear still pictures. You see detail you might not see onscreen. Just looking at this thing, even knowing it's an animatronic model, gives me the creeps.

The crucified Xenomorph isn't exactly hard to spot in the film. The camera focuses on it for several seconds.

I'm still trying to figure out what the hell this has to do with Jesus, though. Jesus was a real human person. Are we supposed to believe that he actually looked like an alien? Or that Mary was impregnated by a facehugger?

Re: PROMETHEUS - Grade and Discuss

^^^ I believe it was implied that Jesus was a human/engineer hybrid - made to look outwardly human so as not to alarm the indigenous population, but having advanced engineer capabilities and attributes. This has nothing ostensibly to do with the xenomorph - as far as we know - which seems to be the product of the black goo coming into contact with a corrupted being - human, engineer or otherwise. I don't think the xenomorph crucifixion is analogous to Jesus in this case.

All this seems to be nothing more than speculation based on a quote in some interview given by Scott (quoted several times here) and an on-screen reference to something very bad happening around 2000 years ago, driving some of the engineers to want to see us annihilated.

Yeah, I got the 2000-years ago bit, but at what point are we supposed to infer that Jesus was a human-looking alien hybrid? I don't remember anything like that being mentioned, and frankly, it feels like a pretty big leap.

And on the third day, a xenomorph named Jesus burst forth from human Jesus's corpse. It descended into the rainforest and hid there for 2000 years until a Predator came to hunt it. The Predator succeeded. Unfortunately, Arnold Schwarzenegger came and blew him up.

Well, if you believe the Christian theology, Jesus was a human/creator hybrid.
