The city on the edge of forever

I was just wondering why when McCoy went back in time just the enterprise disappeared and not the landing party or any of their gear?

The Guardian of Forever is like the eye of the storm, so the area around the Guardian (probably the entire planet) is unaffected by the time displacement.

That's my interpretation, anyway.
