Re: 10 Things We Want From a New Star Trek TV Show
It wouldn't make sense to set a new series past DS9/Voy in the Prime timeline (which is what I take from the point) as that will alienate any fans which came in with the 2009 movie and will be wrapped in all the continuity restraints that the new timeline gets the creators away from. The same with setting a new show in the 2009 timeline but in the 24th or 25th century it will be creating issues for story tellers for future 'JJ Trek' stories. To me the next series should be set in the same universe and at the same timeframe as the last and next movie, they can use some of the same props and costumes as the films as well as developing their own look and feel. This show could be independent from the movie series but with some of the same creative input and some cleaver handling connect the stories without necessitating a view to watch one to appreciate the other. I would have this done similarly to some plot lines being written into the Countdown and Ongoing comics where there could be a build up but where you wouldn't have to have watched (or in that case read) that material to enjoy and understand the movie. To me there are 3 main things which are important for a Trek story; - fun - imaginative - an adventure Thats what Trek was always supposed to be about, and is why the fan films seem to be so popular...no matter if its animation or live action TOS is where it will be. |

Re: 10 Things We Want From a New Star Trek TV Show
1) a show runner with industry clout to champion it, such as Bryan Fuller or JJ Abrams - until someone like that gets things moving, nothing is going to happen 2) the next Abrams movie to be as big or bigger a succes than the last one, to fully convince Moonves that Star Trek is a viable global brand worth investing money in 3) another successful space opera series on TV that proves that the higher budget required vs other genres is not an insurmountable obstacle to financial success (SyFy and Starz both have space opera series in the works, a hopeful sign) 4) a home for the series that makes sense, such as Cartoon Network if it's animated; Netflix for a live action series designed to appeal to fans; Showtime, if the approach is to re-think Star Trek for a premium cable audience; or some other approach that matches the channel to the intended audience |
