March 2012 Challenge - "What if...?"

Good day to you all.

Firstly, a big thanks to everyone who took the time to read and vote for last months entries. Can't actually believe I won on only my second entry

Now on to this months challenge. As the title suggests this challenge will look at a favourite of mine, the "what if" scenario--it can be something huge that changes the galaxy forever, or something small which affects the course of an individual (think along the lines of the TAS episode "Yesteryear", Nu-Trek, or the Myriad Universe books).

Some off-the-top-of-my-head ideas:
- What if Pike hadn't accepted promotion to Fleet Captain and stayed on the Enterprise?
- What if Voyager 6 had never gone missing?
- What if Riker had killed Locutus?
- What if The Circle had succeeded in ridding Bajor of all aliens?
- What if Voyager hadn't entered the Badlands?
- What if it had been Captain Gardner assigned to the NX-01?

Now for some rules:
1. Word limit of 10,000 (I'll be generous for my first time)
2. From the Trek-verse only (era crossovers, mirror universe, Nu-trek universe are all acceptable)
3. Entries can come from any canon series or your own fanon
4. No previously posted stories (either here or on another site), they must be your own work
5. The closing date is Saturday 31st March 2012, at 2100 hours GMT.

I think that should just about cover everything. However any questions, queries or comments then please feel free to ask.

Damn...unfortunately all of the AU's I want to write have already been established. :-/

I don't see a problem with previously established AU's.

This contest would seem to work better if it were focused on canon based "what if?"s as you have to be familiar with what actually happened in the standard timeline.

People are of course more than welcome to do so if they so wish. I do agree that in that framework (where we all know what is supposed to happen), looking at how events might have turned out differently might be easier for the wider audience.

But if someone wants to explore another path for one of their characters/crews then I won't limit them.

Depends on what AU you're look at. If its Nu-Trek, what is the universe like in the 24th century? Or what would happen if the Enterprise-C had stayed, how would her crew cope, what was Worf or Troi up to? After the Xindi destroyed Earth, where did Erica Hernadez find herself?

Even in universes that have previously been established, there are still lots of 'what if' scenarios to play about with.
