Why so many Canadian actors on 24?

24 was never filmed in Canada, was it? Like so many other supposedly American series were? I always thought it was shot in L.A., even during the New York era. And no, I'm not complaining that they did that. Not anymore.

I am just curious as to why so many Canadian actors kept showing up. Was one of the writers or producers from there or something?

Re: Why so many Canadian actors on 24?

I just chalked it up to coincidence. Sure, shooting in Canada gets you tax credits, but to go for the cheapest actor when you're shooting in LA doesn't make a lot of sense. That second-rate actor you hire might mean you're not getting an actor who can take off like a rocket in the role, and lock in a loyal audience that will ensure the series' success.

Basing casting decisions just on cost strikes me as very penny-wise and pound-foolish. You need go no further than Keifer Sutherland to see that. Regardless of what he cost to hire, his hiring was the single biggest element in making the series a success. Bad casting in that role could have sunk the ship.

If this isn't how it works, why do actors in general get paid so much? Why don't we see a continual parade of new actors in movies and TV? There's a continual supply of hopeful wannabees, so why would anyone ever pay an actor more than the most desperate wannabee? The supply and demand pressures would drive all actors' bargaining power down to minimum wage levels and there would be no such thing as stars.

The original drafts of the scripts used for casting were peppered with the word 'eh'.

But they would have to be flown down to L.A. for filming. Wouldn't that cancel things out, budget-wise?

I have a strong hunch there are plenty of Canadian actors in LA all the time, auditioning for parts.

And they're not allowed to act in America until they've joined the Screen Actors Guild of America, after which they get paid the same as an American Actor.

Filming outside of America means no/less SAG commitments.

Also, Canadian actors can't even work in America until they have a visa if only a work-only one. J.J. Abrahms had this problem Evangeline Lilly on Lost, he had to pretty much prove to Immigration that she, and only she, could do the job and then get her a work visa.

I suspect that a lot of shows have "many Canadian actors" as, well, a lot of good actors are Canadian.

There are a lot of Canadian actors in Hollywood, period.

It's a bit of a joke these days -- "Isn't it awful, all these British actors coming over here to Hollywood and stealing Canadian jobs?"

William Shatner - Canadian
Micheal J. Fox - Canadian
Phil Hartman
Mike Myers
Leslie Nielsen
Matthew Perry
Keanu Reeves
Donald and Kiefer Sutherland

And that's just a quick-list of them.

There's a lot of Canadian-born actors living and working in Hollywood.

Canadian actors were used because casting was done in New Zealand.

I was mainly referring to actors who mainly made their living *in* Canada and are not generally well known to American audiences outside of the "Planet Canada" shows that you always see filmed up there.

The other saying is "All the hot Americans on TV are really Canadians, aren't they?"

It's a bit of a trade-off since Randy Quaid is now living in Canada.
