More casting for Constantine as reported by Deadline:

True Blood alumna Lucy Griffiths has been cast as the female lead opposite Matt Ryan in NBC’s drama pilot Constantine, from Warner Bros TV. Also cast in the project, based on the characters in DC Comics’ John Constantine stories are Lost alum Harold Perrineau and Charles Halford (True Detective). Constantine centers on John Constantine (Ryan), an enigmatic and irreverent con man-turned-reluctant supernatural detective who is thrust into the role of defending us against dark forces from beyond. When Liv (Griffiths), the daughter of a late friend, is targeted by demons, Constantine steps in to save her. Griffiths’ Liv is an offbeat young woman tired of her ordinary life who comes to discover that she has the ability of seeing the supernatural world among us, which makes her a key player in the battle between good and evil. Liv teams up with Constantine to save lives, master her power, and learn more about her late father. Perrineau will play Manny, an authoritative angel assigned to watch over Constantine who has the power to step into other people’s bodies, and although he is meant only to observe, Manny will not hesitate to help out if he can save a life. Halford will play Chas, Constantine’s oldest friend and staunch companion who possesses powerful survival skills that might possibly be supernatural.

Re: sf/f TV development news - 2013

The CW's Supernatural spin-off now has a new title, a female lead and a description of the premise. From Deadline:

Following a lengthy casting process, Melissa Roxburgh has landed the female lead of Violet in the planted Supernatural spinoff, now titled Supernatural: Bloodlines (formerly Tribes). Like her new co-stars Nathaniel Buzolic, Sean Faris and Stephen Martines, who all previously recurred on The Vampire Diaries, Roxburgh too has appeared on hit CW series before. She has done an arc on Arrow and a guest stint on the mothership Supernatural series. Written by Andrew Dabb and directed by Robert Singer, Supernatural: Bloodlines revolves around the various mafia-esque monster families that unknowingly to humans “run” the underbelly of Chicago and are being tracked by a newly minted Hunter who’s trying to stop them and rid Chicago of anything or anyone supernatural. Roxburgh’s Violet is a member of the powerful werewolf pack who hides her true nature because of her forbidden love for family rival David (Bozulic). But when cornered, her inner wolf breaks free.

The "planted" spinoff? Is that a spellcheck fail for "planned," or is it some new bit of industry jargon? Because I think this is the second time I've seen it.

Re: sf/f TV development news - 2013

A bunch of different outlets used the "planted spin-off" terminology. Either they all copied the same typo in a CW press release or it's terminology for a backdoor pilot planted as an episode in the main series.

A planted spinoff has its seeds planted in the main show but does not spinoff the characters. Probably gets fuzzy sometimes I imagine but like Stargate Universe vs Angel.

I'm glad they renamed the show. Tribes was an out of place and silly name for the franchise. Sharing the name with a popular FPS franchise didn't help matters any either.

Here's a definition of "planted spin-off" by the WGA [link]:

A "planted spin-off" is commonly understood to be a new series in which the main character(s) of the new series is not a regular character in the first series, but is introduced in the original series for the specific purpose of creating a new series with that character. For example, "Melrose Place" is a planted spin-off of "Beverly Hills, 90210," as the characters in the new series were introduced in the original series specifically to spin-off into a new series.

Yeah the new title definitely fits better. Tribes makes it almost sound like a period piece IMO.

Re: sf/f TV development news - 2013

Have there been any confirmations as to the identities of the other three monster families? From what I can tell only the werewolves and shapeshifters have been confirmed. One of the families has got to be vampires. What do you guys think the other two could be?
