Re: Movies Seen in 2012

355. Sorority Row (✩✩½) - DVD - Some girls pull a prank and one of them ends up dead. They then decide to cover it up. Months later, someone who knows what they did starts coming after them. It's Pretty Little Liars in a two-hour movie. It was a watchable thriller but it lacked a clever ending. The girls were hot though and I got to see Briana Evigan in a starring role. She's the daughter of Greg Evigan.

356. Into the Wild (✩✩✩½) - DVD - The story of Chris McCandless, the guy who left the modern world behind to roam around in the woods. I heard about his story on Oprah a while back. Sean Penn, who produced this movie, wanted Leonardo DiCaprio but got Emile Hirsch instead. He did good and looked like the real McCandless. I was also surprised to see that this thing had a pretty substantial supporting cast that included Kristen Stewart, Vince Vaughn, Zach Galifianakis, Catherine Keener, Marcia Gay Harden and William Hurt. I don't remember seeing Galifianakis. As for the story itself, it starts slow but grabs you eventually.

357. The Christmas Heart (✩✩½) - Live TV - Another Christmas TV movie. A boy needs a heart transplant and a lot of people and the right events come together to make it happen. It was alright.

358. Arbitrage (✩✩✩½) - On Demand - Richard Gere plays a hedge fund billionaire who accidentally kills his mistress in a car accident and then tries to cover it up. This is on top of his troubles with some Madoff-style fraud that he's also trying to cover up. It's a good thriller. Some things unfolded a little too easily for the sake of expedience but the meat of the movie, which was about a rich man's power and his attempt to make his troubles go away was pretty decent. I also enjoyed seeing Laetitia Casta in an acting role for the first time. Then there's Brit Marling. This is the first time I've seen her in a mainstream role. It's good to see her realizing her goals of using her independent films to jumpstart a career in film.

198. Dave (B)
199. Soylent Green (B-)
200. How to Kill Your Neighbor's Dog (B)

Dave: Although slight, and with a premise that takes some machinations to swallow, this is a funny romantic comedy with larger, more adult aims than most of what the genre has produced in the past decade. Kevin Kline's work-for-all legislation might have been plausible as presidential policy in the early 1990s, but it would be denounced by the right and cable news as Stalinism today, which is depressing.

Soylent Green: Parts of this movie are exceptional cinema -- Edward G. Robinson's final scene, the opening montage which appropriates the editing of Cuban cinema of the 60s, and the chaos of the long food lines which turn into riots. Parts of the movie are terrible cinema -- Heston's hilariously large New York apartment in a world where space is supposed to be at a premium, the clumsy staging of Heston's supposedly stealthy entrance into the Soylent factory, the awful 70s fashion raised to the limit (because this is the future!), and others I won't list. There's a great movie waiting to be found in this material, but the makers only foud an okay one in it.

How to Kill your Neighbor's Dog: At times this verges on sentimentality, but most of the emotion feels earned, and the gleeful dickishness of Kenneth Branagh (apologies for the spelling) is amusing throughout. It nails Los Angeles, too, even though I am not convinced it was made there.

150. It's A Wonderful Life (A+)

I had originally planned to watch this before Christmas, but I was vacationing with relatives who turned out not to have a Blu-ray player (my cousin there has never seen this, either). But as a result it ended up being my 150th film of the year, which is a nice place to be. I've reviewed this in earlier years, so not much to say about it, really, other than it's obvious why it has endured for nearly 70 years.

If there's any genre that is in desperate need of resuscitation right now, it's the romantic comedy, which has fallen far even from the 1990s.

Re: Movies Seen in 2012

201. Trek Nation (C-)

Trek Nation: This documentary has been in the works for nearly a decade, which only makes the end result all the more frustrating. Its principle problem is one of indecision - is this a movie about a son finding out about his father who he barely knew, or is it a movie about the Star Trek phenomenon that his father created? The movie never decides; it seems as if it began as one film and morphed into another during production, but that no one could choose which direction to ultimately take in editing.

The result of this is a mixed bag. There are home videos and unedited interview clips that suggest a Gene Roddenberry the publicity machine could never allow. There are also a parade of talking heads praising Roddenberry's vision, even crediting him for the decisions of others (including the infamous interracial kiss during the original series' third year), as well as a parade of the wackiest of fans. These latter elements are really a distraction from Rod Roddenberry's attempt to understand his father, and, worse, old hat.

Other elements are just missed opportunities; an interview with Majel Barrett before her death lets her be evasive and vague and an interview with George Lucas never seems to have a purpose or substance. Production values are top notch, but they can't provide this film with a focus.

Re: Movies Seen in 2012

359. The Words (✩✩✩½) - On Demand - A struggling writer becomes famous after finding and publishing someone else's manuscript as if it were his own. Stars Bradley Cooper, Zoe Saldana, Jeremy Irons, Dennis Quaid and Olivia Wilde. The movie didn't get rave reviews, but I thought it was pretty good for the most part. In hindsight, parts of it do seem a bit half-baked though, so I can see where some of the criticism lies. Still, I recomend it. It's worth a look.

360. Employee of the Month (✩✩✩½) - Live TV - Two employees who work at a Costco-style warehouse store compete for employee of the month as well as the affections of the hot new cashier. Stars Dax Shepard, Dane Cook and Jessica Simpson. I liked this movie. The comedic performances and wacky hijinks, especially from Dax, were pretty good. And Jessica Simpson played a genuine character. This is the kind of movie that's easy to dismiss at first glance, but I'm glad I saw it.

This concludes my movie reviews for 2012.

202. Men In Black 3 (B)
203. A Bronx Tale (B-)

Men In Black 3: After the first sequel, my expectations for this installment were pretty low, but it turned out to be pretty entertaining. Josh Brolin was an inspired casting choice for the role of young Agent K, and there are also nice supporting turns from Michael Stuhlbarg and Bill Hader. It is still lesser than the original, of course, but unlike the second film, worth a rental.

A Bronx Tale: The first hour of this movie is awfully reminiscent of Goodfellas, but the second half goes off in a much more interesting direction that examines the relations between the Italian American community and the black community in the late 1960s. Unfortunately, the more interesting part is hampered by a couple of weak performances in key roles.

This is the last of my list for 2012. As I said at the beginning I have only added films that I watched for the first time.

199. The Gay Divorcee
200. In Bruges
201. The Snowman and the Snowdog
202. Keith Lemon: The Film
203. The Girl
204. Trek nation
205. The Hobbit: An unexpected Journey (and running time)

Best films I saw this year were 'Shame', 'Invincible Shaolin', 'Tyrannosaur'.

Re: Movies Seen in 2012

Baghead ★★½ Comedy/Horror
Jay and Mark Duplass film involving a group of friends who travel to a cabin to film a horror movie. It's really low budget, but it's an interesting film.
Carnage (2011) ★★★ Drama
It's a whole movie where idiots yell at each other over their sons getting in a fight. It's good and I think the ending is especially great. All the actors are top notch and Roman Polanski is the director.
Rock of Ages (2012) ★★★ Musical
It's silly, but it's fun. Julianne Hough looks especially gorgeous.
Sinister (2012) ★★★ Horror
A serviceable horror film. It's good, but not great. There are some genuinely terrifying moments mixed in with some unintentionally comic ones.

John Dies at the End (2012) ★★★★ Comedy/SF&F
Where has this film been all my life? Hilariously weird. I can't wait to check out the books.

My Final reviews for 2012

Django Unchained

This was one of the best movies I saw this year. It felt like a Quinten Terantino Film, with the violence and humor you would come to expect. I loved the soundtrack, the cast, the story, and that ending might be the coolest ending I've seen in a movie this year. I would love a sequel, mainly because Django is such a badass/cool character.

Les Miserables

I wonder what it is with me a musicals. There are some musicals (Rent and Chicago come to mind) that I really like, and there are some (This movie and Phantom of the Opera) that make me bored out of my mind. Maybe it's the musical that has 97% of the dialoge all sung, and that's what this movie was. The cast didn't do a terrible job, but I just found the movie tedious and boring. Thumbs up to Anne Hathaway who knocked I've dreamed a Dream" out of the park. Also, is it me or has Helana Bonhim Carter become just comic relief. I don't think I've seen her play a different character in any film.

Theater: 19 (+2)
BluRay: 9
On Demand/TV: 4
Itunes: 6

So that does it for 2012. I admit I don't see as many movies as all of you, but I see a good amount. The reason I participate in this thread each year is to remember the movies I've seen throughout the year the first time, and if I was asked to make a best of list, I could do it easily.

I don't think Mrs. Lovett, Dr. Hoffman, Mme. Thenardier and the witch in Big Fish are the same character. But she seems determined to channel Elsa Lanchester in all her recent roles. Perhaps she and Ian McNiece should do a Lanchester/Laughton biopic?

Or she could at least do an album of risque Cockney songs.

I was thinking more along the lines of her character in Alice in Wonderland, here, and the Harry Potter Films. It's that crazy "comic" character that just feels really familiar. Like I said, I don't think I've seen her in a serious role at all.
