Re: Movies Seen in 2012
49. Cabaret (C+) This movie holds the record for most Oscar wins for a film that didn't win Best Picture (8) - in fact, it considerably outperformed The Godfather, the film that won that year. And while a lot of people would now give the latter film more of the total Oscar haul, Cabaret's reputation has held up over the years. Unforunately, I just didn't like it that much. A big part of that is Michael York, who is just so, so boring. Liza Minnelli is very strong as the lead, but I just had a hard time caring about anybody. Cinema: 11 Home Video: 32 Computer: 6 (+1)

Re: Movies Seen in 2012
Last Days Here - free admission The Three Stooges - free admission The NeverEnding Story II: The Next Chapter - DVD Saw The Five-Year Engagement again today, 'cause a friend of mine picked it. After she left, I wound up bein' the only one in the theater for The Three Stooges, a movie so unamusin' that they couldn't even make a fart joke funny...and fart jokes are ALWAYS funny!!! - edit, to add - Recently rewatched The NeverEnding Story, a movie I haven't watched since I was a kid...and was reminded why I hadn't watched it since I was a kid. The "Family Double Feature" DVD also had the sequel, which I hadn't seen before... ...and I just finished it. Kinda wish I hadn't bothered with this DVD at all. 127. The Road: (✩✩✩½) - DVD - A man and his sone travel a post apocalyptic world trying to survive. Through their travels, they run across all sorts of different people and situations. It's pretty bleak, both in its story and visual style with the lack of vibrant colors, but it's engaging. Viggo Mortensen stars. Other big names appear as well, but they're hardly recognizable. 128. Unstoppable: (✩✩✩½) - DVD - An unmanned train carrying toxic waste is out of control and it's up to Denzel Washington and Chris Pine to stop it. It's somewhat formulaic but otherwise, it's a good action thriller that's about as good as Washington's other movies. Is it really that hard to get on a moving train though? 129. The Avengers: (✩✩✩½) - Theatre - I wasn't completely and utterly blown away like so many others. I thought it was pretty standard fare, but I still enjoyed the movie. Theatre: 5 DVD/Blu-Ray: 45 Live TV: 55 Recorded TV: 4 On Demand: 18 Internet: 2 |

50. The Avengers (A) Discussed more in the review thread, but this raises the bar for superhero action, and is the best pure blockbuster I've seen in years. It lacks the thematic depth of X-Men: First Class, but the Avengers have never really had that in comparison with the X-Men anyway. Cinema: 12 (+1) Home Video: 32 Computer: 6

Re: Movies Seen in 2012
Last Days Here - free admission The Three Stooges - free admission The NeverEnding Story II: The Next Chapter - DVD The Avengers - free admission Damsels in Distress - free admission Sound of My Voice - free admission Had a double feature at the Drafthouse - South Lamar this evenin'. First up was Damsels in Distress, about four college girls who try to improve their male-dominated environment. Set in the present day, it looked more like a throwback to the '50s. And, more than anything, it reminded me of Clueless, but with even more absurd dialogue. Followed that up with Sound of My Voice, about a couple tryin' to make a documentary about cults & end up joinin' one, where the cult leader claims to be from the year 2054. I almost didn't get in - damn thing near sold out! I've got passes to see either The Dictator or The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel this comin' Thursday night, lettin' a friend of mine pick which she wants to see. |

Re: Movies Seen in 2012
It's pretty much like the other Marvel Studios' films: entertaining, but no big surprises either. I was actually disappointed in the villain, Loki. In Thor he had this great personal conflict with Odin and conflicting loyalties, here he just wants to rule the world. |

Re: Movies Seen in 2012
61. The Avengers (C) The Avengers: I wish the movie had lived up to my expectations; early reviews and fan reaction have been very positive, so I was shocked by how mediocre the whole affair was. -The first 30-40 minutes were rather tedious and expository. -The movie was stuffed to the brim with techno-babble in place of story. -Thor (whose standalone movie I have not seen) is rather lifeless as a character, which is probably why he's absent from much of the movie. -Loki was even worse as the antagonist; why bring back the bad guy from the worst received movie in the series, anyway? -Despite grumbling about recasting, Mark Ruffalo offers the most interesting take on the Banner/Hulk I've seen since Bill Bixby played him on television. -Robert Downey Jr. steals the movie; I wish I had been able to see Shane Black's Iron Man 3 instead. -Hawkeye made me laugh every time he appeared on screen; a guy with a bow and arrow (that never run out!) appears ludicrous next to the other Avengers. I tend to think that the superhero genre is just played out for me as a viewer at this point. I'm excited for The Dark Knight Rises, but am also happy that it will be the end of that version of the series. Theatres: 23 +1 Home Video: 34 Computer: 4
