Got together with my buddy Jeff and my friend Chellis & her young son yesterday for a free advance screenin' of Pirates. I saw the trailer for this back in December when D & I went to see the Muppet movie, and I thought it looked good enough to check out.

It was a pretty cute movie, but some of the best jokes are in the trailers, includin' my favorite ("Of course, I'm using 'crew' in the street sense. Yo.") one.

The 3D was alright, but I don't see how it really added anything to the movie.

Started to watch the Street Kings sequel the other day, finally finished it yesterday afternoon. It just got too predictable too quickly. I do like Ray Liotta, though, and the first Street Kings was pretty decent, but this movie has nothin' to do with that movie, except for the title.

Got together with Liz, a girl I know here in Austin but haven't seen in awhile, and her friend Noelle for this week's Studio Ghibli The Cat Returns last night before work.

Pretty short movie, but it was a good one, lots of humor to it, and well worth checkin' out. And Liz enjoyed it, sayin' it was better than the Disney-fied version she's used to.

Not sure if I'll be seein' anything new today, but I've got a pass for The Five Year Engagement Tuesday night.

- edit, to add -

After a few attempts, I finally finished the third Prophecy movie. Its also the last to feature Christopher Walken's Gabriel.

Two more to go!

13. John Carter: B
14. Hunger Games: B+
15. Wrath of the Titans: C
16. Cabin In the Woods: B+
17. The Rum Diary: C

This Johnny Depp film based on another Hunter S. Thompson story just never grabbed my attention. Now, Amanda Heard, her scenes did grab me for the sole reason they were there. However, I never cared about the paper, the politics of the island and how the set-up had caused Kemp(Depp) to be a bit on the run from the law. I will say the cinematography was nice and the supporting cast with Aaron Eckart and Giovanni Ribsi were all good casting but the script never got me to be involved in the story. As I watched I kept waiting to not feel indifference.

53. Gone Baby Gone

A good crime thriller, but unfortunately I guessed the ending very early on. Nevertheless, it is very well acted (the Affleck brothers are both talented, just in different areas) and there are a few really stunning moments (which lose a bit of their effect in retrospect - I really wish the film hadn't taken the conspiracy angle it did).

After seein' The Hunger Games for the third time, I went into the Bob Marley bio documentary.

Two and a half hours of mostly dry stuff about a pretty lively guy, that seemed to cover everything from before he was born to after he died. Interviews with folks who knew him are mixed in with concert footage, news footage, headlines & photos.

But still, two & a half hours long...

May go see Cool Hand Luke tomorrow night...pretty sure I've seen the movie, but I can't really remember it, except for the bits I see in the trailer. I know its familiar, but damned if I can tell ya how it ends...

117. Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol: (✩✩✩½) - On Demand - The plot was a tad bit convoluted, but I enjoyed this outing. It had some good action sequences, some cool tech, Tom Cruise looked good, Scotty was a hoot and Paula Patton was distractngly hot. Seriously! I even liked the surprise at the end. Bring on M:I 5. I don't know if this is true or not, but I heard that they wanted Jeremy Renner to take over the franchise. Personally, I don't see it. By the way, I was surprised to see Mike Dopud. Then I read up on the movie and saw that part of it was shot in Vancouver.

118. The Company Men: (✩✩✩½) - DVD - Ben Affleck stars as a guy with a wife, a kid, a big house and a sports car who just lost his job. The movie deals with the difficulties of finding work, being dispensible, keeping up appearances and all the other difficulties involved with the loss of a high profile job. The movie also stars Kevin Costner, Chris Cooper and Tommy Lee Jones.

119. This Movie is Broken: (✩✩) - DVD - A guy and a girl have a one-night stand, and he wants to surprise her with a night at a Broken Social Scene concert before she leaves for Paris. This movie is definately broken. It's pure crap that verges on unwatchable. The whole movie is literally a taped concert with maybe 10 minutes of movie spliced in. I almost fastforwarded through some of it. I gave it a very generous two stars because I like Broken Social Scene, summer in Toronto and Georgina Reilly, but otherwise, it's not much of a movie at all.

120. Finding a Family: (✩✩✩) - Live TV - A TV movie about Alex, a bright young kid who has to leave his mentally ill mother and find a family who will take him in so that he can realize his goal of going off to Harvard and making something of himself. Not a bad watch.

121. Cop Out: (✩✩✩) - Live TV - Stars Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan as a couple of dicks who have just been suspended. Hilarity ensues as they spend their time off trying to track down Willis' baseball card so that he can sell it to pay for his daughter's wedding. This one is a good mix of big-budget movie and Kevin Smith's usual raunchy/stream of consciousness style, but it does drag a bit.

122. The Fantastic Four: (✩✩✩) - Internet - I saw Trekker's thread and decided to download this movie. It's the 1994 version that wasn't intended for release. I talk more about it in that thread, but basically, I had fun watching it and thought it had some strong points.

59. Me and Orson Welles (B)

Me and Orson Welles: This movie doesn't break any barriers, but it makes for solid entertainment. Christian McKay has been widely praised for his performance as Orson Welles; I thought he nailed the voice, but was a little old for the part (Welles was 22 when he staged Julius Caesar; McKay was about 35 when he made the movie). Zac Efron is passable as the lead, if a bit over the top at points (the script is no help; it's never quite believable that he could be so whiny and naive around the people of the Mercury Theatre). Claire Danes is breathtaking as the chief love interest (also, way out of Efron's league). Richard Linklaiter's direction gets the job done, although it isn't as impressive as the filmmaker's work in animation.

Loved every minute of it. Joss Whedon delivers. Gonna have to view again, as it's still on my mind. Virtually every session was sold out today.

Got a free ticket to see Cool Hand Luke last night. I know I must have seen this movie before, but damned if I could remember it more than the stuff I could see in the trailer.

So, I'm countin' last night as a first time viewin'. Pretty good movie, too.

Watched the unrated version of The Grudge sequel, half of it last night, the other half this afternoon. Got bored with it for a bit, ya know...

Not that great a movie, not really in a rush to see the third one, either.

Got a plan to see Bully tomorrow, and The Raven some time this weekend...

Got my passes to a free 3D screenin' Monday night in the mail yesterday. If I'm off from work, I'll be there...

I know there's a free screenin' goin' on tonight, too, thanks to a couple of contests I saw posted, but I have to work, so I didn't sign up for any of 'em.

54. Rosemary's Baby

Finally saw this classic horror film and quite liked it. It's not scary in the sense that monsters are jumping at you, but it steadily builds tension until the ending.

123. The Illustrated Man: (✩✩✩) - Recorded TV - A young man meets a hobo in the countryside who then shows him the tattoos given to him by a mysterious woman. Three visions come out of these tattoos... One about a sterile reality, one that takes place on another world and another about the last day on Earth. The movie isn't easy to follow but it's got some good TOS-like atmosphere, having been made in ther late 60s and all. It's also got a bit of food for thought, even if that thought is... What the hell did I just watch?

124. Winter's Bone: (✩✩½) - DVD - With her father gone due to some trouble he was in, a teenage girl (Jennifer Lawrence) does what she can to look after her younger siblings and deals with the fact that they might lose the house. I was bored to death watching this and couldn't figure out for the life of me why this was so critically acclaimed or why it got 94% on Rotten Tomatoes. What did I miss? What am I not seeing? ...I thought. Then after a bit of reflection and reading, I came to the conclusion that critics and most people in general like movies that tell a certain truth and/or don't hit you over the head with a simplistic message. If that's the case, then this movie delivers, I guess. It shows the gritty reality of the America we don't often see and a strong young girl doing her best to get by. Not a bad story to tell, I just wish it was more engaging because my actual viewing experience wasn't a good one.

^ You might like it, I don't know. And I like Jennifer Lawrence. She did great in The Hunger Games but she didn't blow me away in Winter's Bone. That's not to say that she was bad. She wasn't, I just wasn't engaged enough.
