Iron Man 3: Robert Downey Jr talks about movie

With The Avengers near-completion, Robert Downey Jr. is already gearing up for his fifth big screen appearance as Tony Stark (counting a cameo in The Incredible Hulk) in Iron Man 3. The actor spoke with The LA Times about the 2013 film and what it's going to mean transitioning from director Jon Favreau to Shane Black.

"The thing about Shane is that it will be anything but one of those moments," Downey says of the Marvel project potentially matching the sardonic humor of their previous team-up, Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang, "unless we come up with something that is so cheeky and character-driven and perfect that it has to be in the movie."

Downey also admits that, despite the box office success of Iron Man 2, there are elements of the final film that he's not entirely satisfied with. The aim for the third go-round is to "leave it all on the field" and fall back on the natural rapport between Black and himself.

"We're not talking much about [the script] right now," he says, "because Shane is off writing and we talked before that and when we are talking again, the talking is going to be over pretty quick... It's kind of like we're fighting on the same side and at the same time we're circling each other, so it's all great. It should be great. "

Glad to see that RDJ admitted that that parts of IM2 didn't work. Seems like he is going to get along with the new director just fine. Can't wait for the sequel!

He's already admitted parts of Iron Man 2 didn't work in a GQ article last year that was I think discussed quite a bit in the Iron Man 2 thread. He's also worked with Shane Black before as mentioned in the article you posted so I'm not surprised that he would get along him. I'm very much looking forward to the film.

EDIT: argh ninja'd by Admiral Young

It's his first public statement on the disappointment of "IM2" but Favreau and RDJ seemed to have been disappointed months after the release of the movie.

Still rumors at the point but Favreau moving on to direct "Magic Kingdom" might lend some weight to the rumors

CinemaBlend says "Favreau really wanted to direct The Avengers but Marvel didn’t want to pay for him. Their negotiations with Favreau to secure him as the director of Iron Man 2 were difficult and Favreau worked out a deal that got him paid more money. Marvel wasn’t willing to pay that kind of money again when it came time for The Avengers, and so even though Favs wanted to direct their superhero team-up movie, they didn’t want him. Instead Marvel has made it a point to seek out cheaper talent to direct all of their subsequent movies. Joss Whedon was hired to direct The Avengers and while he’s a mega-talented director he’s also a much cheaper hire than someone like Favreau.

I prefer Whedon over Favreau anyway.

I'm really glad Shane Black is also writing IM3 in addition to directing it. It should be a fun movie.

I just watched KKBB a couple months ago and really enjoyed, so I'm pretty excited now that I know it's the same director doing IM3.

I think it's great that the director will also be writing to give some creative consistency. I also think it's great that we have someone who has worked with RDJ before, since he is clearly the best aspect of this series. That's why I think these films were so highly regarded in the first place. They were decently written, directed and all that, but the reason they are mentioned in the same sentence as The Dark Knight is because of the performances. So as long as those remain top quality, I'm excited.

I like Favreau but Iron Man 2 and Cowboys and Aliens have not left me impressed to say the least.

I do too but for more nefarious reasons.

I really want him to run for governor, and he could use the exposure.

He almost ran in 2010 but bowed out at the last minute saying "maybe next time."

Val Kilmer...a talented guy who probably sabotaged his career by being such a difficult pain in the ass to work with.

Would Favreau reprise his role as Happy Hogan after everything that happened? He had some good scenes in the first two and I hate recasting.

Re: Iron Man 3: Robert Downey Jr talks about movie

^ I'd like to see him return as Happy but it is a small enough role that they can write it out completely. They didn't really expand on it as much as they could. I have a feeling that Favs did that on purpose, since he needed to concentrate on directing as well.

Someone made a joke that Happy Hogan should be on vacation at Disneyland. A injoke for Favreau's next project "Magic Kingdom"
