Just watched two more episodes:

The Swarm: The A-plot with the alien of the week was underdeveloped and uninteresting, but I did enjoy the B-plot with the Doctor losing his memory. I am curious to see what comes of all this for the Doctor.

False Profits: My, my, my. This was quite a ridiculous episode, full of plot holes and logic flaws. It did have its redeeming qualities, though. Good continuity with TNG and a handful of humorous scenes.

"The Swarm" has that typical emotional A plot with ridiculous tacked on and unnecessary b plot that we see so often in TNG and earlier VOY. I think later on that Voyager's stories tend to be more focused with less A/B plots and more episodes devoted to one main plot fleshed out more. I think "Real Life" was one of the worst episodes for having a great A plot and a ridiculously technobabbly/unneccessary b plot - it really puts me off rewatching.

There was alot of talk about False Prophets.
1.] Why didn't Janeway can the Ferengi and use the wormhole?
2.] They are using Gods name incorrectly in a Norwegian-Greek creation they made.
All in all- Janeway was false and the prophets were O.K.

About the B-plot of Real Life, Tom shows that the only way to live is to dive into the chaos (of real life.) The B-plot is a sort of antiparallel to the A-plot, in that the Doctor doesn't make Paris' choice naturally but has to be taught. It's technically two different plots, but one theme. I thought the sitcom nature of the scenario was perfectly absurd in any time other than US Fifties TV. Personal jeopardy to Tom had no resonance, as a star, he was guaranteed survival.

The absurd growing backwards premise of Innocence, which was low rated, was a metaphor for how we all face death as children. I think it would have been better if they came up with something that wasn't obviously nuts.

The A-plot of The Swarm was supposed to show that some enemy aggressions were too outrageous to go unopposed, even if violence was in the end justified. It failed, apparently because the insanely aggressive of blockading empty space didn't strike too many people as insanely aggressive. While it struck me as too impossible to take seriously. The B-plot was a hurt/comfort scenario (as I think they're called,) a very character driven story (in the most negative sense of the word.) Was it a soft reboot of the character? The initial version of the Doctor as having a terrible bedside manner certainly underwent a radical revision. Later, even when the Doctor was astonishingly egotistical, it was played for comic effect. I think the episode was supposed to be a sign post, so to speak, for the softening process.

But it was so obviously the tacked on sideplot required to make the show more "sci-fi" like they did back in the earlier days. It was just a horrible sideplot very tenuously connected to the main plot, all they did was spout technobabble about some random anomaly of the week™ for most of it, its unbearably bad to watch.

Do you really honestly believe that was a "big meaning?" It's hard to believe anyone could really think this.

It sure wasn't a "fun" sci-fi concept because the idea of such a blockade is ridiculous. The fun is seeing Janeway being a kickass commander with the balls to oppose outrageous aggressors ("bullies" in the episode.) Even if it lead to violence.

Backtracking a bit, what did everyone think of The Chute? It was another episode I watched yesterday, but somehow it managed to get pushed back to page 15. Here is my brief review of it from before:

The Chute: Not very good, but not too bad either. I liked the way Janeway handled the situation with the government as well as with the terrorists. Wang's acting was rotten as usual.

I thought it was better than that myself. I don't recall how Janeway handled it unfortunately. It was nice to have a mention of Neelix's ship, if a bit out of left field.
