This seems to spring from Scotty's general panicky attitude when they exceed warp 6 or whatever.
Well that or Kirk's boldness with the ship forcing the engineer to remind him of the design specs.

I think Scott did utter something along those lines in ST IV.

Doug
Nope.
You're right. Overnight, I thought some more, and realized that Scott had a variation of another semi-iconic line. It was something like: "The crystals can't take much more of this."

Will someone with better memory please clarify? Thanks.
There's no such line in Trek V at all. The vaguely closest thing is, "We'll beat those Klingon devils, even if I have to get out and push."

The question was about IV, not V.

In the previews for Trek 6 (not the teaser with the archival footage), Scotty looks at a console during the attack and says "she cannot take much more of this!" In the film itself, I think all he says is "she's packing quite a whallop! Shields weaking!" It's been a little while since I've seen it though.

Whoops. Well, there's no such line in IV as released, albeit the script reads:

SCOTTY'S VOICE
I don't think she'll hold together,
sir!

During the first time warp, but that entire exchange didn't make the final edit.

In TVH, Scotty is talking about the dilithium crystals and says, "They're giving out. De-crystallizing." That's similar to a line in "The Time Trap," when he says "It's our dilithium crystals, sir. They're deteriorating rapidly."
