To be fair, more people tended to wear their beards like this in ancient China, rather than the Fu Manchu thing we're more used to. Most historical epic films from Asia usually have this look versus the arrangement the Mandarin is usually associated with.

Yeah it was reported some time ago that it would be set at Christmas time. Mandarin looks fantastic. I can't wait for the trailer tomorrow.

Even if that weren't the case, IM1 made the point that the Ten Rings organization was a collection of nationalities that covered most of Genghis Kahn's empire, which means that this Mandarin could have a mix of Arabic, Russo, and Sino roots.

I do have to say, the fact that the armor is operating without him wearing a control harness does seemingly support the idea that he's done some sub-dermal work.
