Star Trek: Infinite Space now accepting pre-beta sign-ups

Wow a Facebook ad actually proved useful. You can now sign-up for Star Trek: Infinite Space, choosing a character name and reserving a slot for the beta as well as obtaining some kind of special item.

I'm Aloysius Shinth (I wanted Captain Spock, but you know, that was taken).

It will be interesting to see if this ends up being fun stuff or not.

I signed up today too. I'm Mac Calhoun (Mackenzie was already taken, of course).

I suspect some of the taken names might be reserved for NPCs - can't really have people running around with the same names as characters we'd like to meet, right?

I signed up... because frankly I have a feeling STO is going to fold before years end.

Is the game just space combat?

Yeah, looks kind of like Star Fleet Command, but with more role-playing, which is fine with me. I wouldn't mind more away-team stuff, but I'm not getting the sense that's part of the deal. It could always change, I suppose!

agreed, STO's problem is it doesn't look anything like star trek, they've been allowed to take far too many liberties with the whole design, everything from the look of the aliens right through to ship design. Something tells me it's not 'trekkies' that are making it. I look at some of their ship designs and just cringe tbh.

Hmm, now it looks like the beta has been cancelled and this game may not happen after all.

Layoffs at Gameforge Threaten Free to Play Star Trek: Infinite Space MMO

The promising looking free Star Trek MMO's future is in doubt as the developer lets 100 staff members go.

Star Trek: Infinite Space was looking pretty impressive when we checked it out at Gamescom earlier this year. Offering an authentic Star Trek experience in your browser for free, the game looked different enough from Cryptic Studios' Star Trek Online to coexist peacefully in the increasingly crowded MMO marketplace.

Yesterday, however, news emerged that developer Gameforge was undergoing a period of "integration and realignment" in order to "improve resource deployment and leverage large potential for further growth," according to CEO Alexander Rösner. In other words, some of Gameforge's existing titles weren't performing as well as they should, meaning they'll be closing down shortly. Specifically, Diabloesque RPG Hellbreed, which we looked at back in September and Mythos, originally developed by team members who had previously worked on Diablo, are for the chop -- and Star Trek: Infinite Space is at risk, too. Not only that, but 100 staff members have lost their jobs as part of the restructuring procedures.

Gameforge is currently "exploring co-publishing options" for the game and wrote in a brief note to fans that the upcoming beta test had been put on indefinite hold pending some kind of arrangement being reached with a co-publisher. If no such arrangement can be reached, then the project will be cancelled.
That's a shame, I was hopeful this game might be worthwhile.

Cancellation for ST: Infinite Space?

I'm not surprised. Ever since Legacy, I've never held my breath for any new Trek game (announced or not). STO has distorted and changed the Trek universe too much for my tastes IMO (just doesn't give off that right kind of Trek vibe). I would have more hope for fan-made projects, but they more often than not are simply vaporware.
